Distasteful learning experience

Thought I would share, and this may be _very_ helpful to novices such as myself. As most of us have read heard rite here or other boards, the DGT is not a good idea with most tobaccos other than Virgs. Of course, I had to find out the inconvenient way. Was smoking first pipeful ever of 'Navy Flake' last nite, 1/2 way through and just starting to enjoy it. Got interupted and laid pipe down for about two hours. Came back to it, thought 'what the heck'. lightly tamped and lit. ig: Besides rank taste, didn't put out rite away. Now have a pipe from my meager rotation out of circ. for about a week while I get the 190 proof to work on it. Gee, I guess those exp. pipe smokers at times know what they are talking about.

Hmmmm... I haven't found that to be the case. Most of the time I DGT heavy latakia blends and find them to be exquisite. They don't "change" as much as a virginia blend does, but they're still a fine smoke.

However, if I've smoked "wet" the night before... DGT'ing that can be a soggy, nasty, foul tasting mess.

Just my 3 cents worth.

Ah ha, feeble brain just remembered that pipe has allways smoked kind of 'wet' John. Thought it was due to the ultra sweet 'aromatics' i was trying out. Had cleaned it up good prior to trying the flake, but of course that doesn't change the physical properties of the pipe. The learning experience can be a sometimes painful thing, often. Dock, SHMBO strolled in and observed me observing the pipe I watched MT carve while I was up that way. It's finished now, and think that will be it for purchases for the near future. Will keep :cyclops: on the eight set though.

I have the same experience with some tobaccos. Fortunately Walnut is not one of them, though as a general rule I do not let tobacco sit in a pipe overnight. At the end of the day I most always thoroughly clean the pipes that I have been smoking that day.

From my experience, the best place to keep Walnut overnight is the Post Office. Heads up Puff Daddy. Incoming. Sniper fire. You'll wish you were on the tarmac with Hillary.
