Very nice collection Shell. A shellbriar billiard in at least a group 4 or larger is one that I keep watching for, have yet to have one come my way. That 4103 of yours with the silver band is a beaut!

Thanks Hunter; very much appreciated. That 4103 was my first Dunhill (of those I currently own) - its still my fave to look at and hold and its a great Va/Bur smoker.

Oh yes, I had browsed through Downie’s gallery before. Those pieces of art surely are among the most stunning pipes I have seen so far – especially the creatures (the Cthulhu pipe being my personal favourite)!

But this is "only" the Dunhill thread, ;) I guess Stephen Downie would deserve one of his own.

Well, threads like this appear regularly. Bashing Dunhill pipes is a sport of sorts among the multiple pipe groups in the Internet. Dunhill used to be the brand I purchased the most, and I always thought they were worth the price. However, a few years ago (can't recall how long ago this was, but I would say about 5 years) I had an issue with one pipe and had to return it under the warranty. It turned out to be a major pain in the caboose!

The distributor (Music City Marketing) said they don't have anything to do with the warranty, that they are only the distributors. (What the ...?) They directed me to Dunhill (yes, the mother company). After some struggle, I found the person that would deal with it. After discussing the terms, the pipe needing replacement was sent to Dunhill (not to MCM, they washed their hands the very first time I contacted them). After a long, long time and many phone calls I finally received the replacement pipe. It was a shape and finish not even remotely like the pipe sent in for replacement. The Dunhill person did not know anything about pipes and didn't really care. Eventually, I decided to eat the loss just because I had enough of it. It was a loss because the pipe I got (tan shell) was priced lower than the pipe I sent (bruyere). I decided then and there that this is not a business I care to sponsor and never bought another Dunhill.

However, I was always happy with the pipes and thought they were worth the price paid. I might even reconsider buying more if/when they change distributor.

I guess we all have to have at least one.
Everybody wants a birth year Dunhill.
From what I've heard, they don't make
em like they used to, so buy an estate.
I see a '52 at an affordable price.
I sure wouldn't pop for a new one.

You got me thinking about a Birthday Year Dunhill.. ( 1953 ) So I went to take a peek at Ebay.. Geezzzzzz.. I can get on for a mere $2,700.00 Plus.. I think I will take my chances going to Estate Sales etc.. I still have some years left in me ... Not going to pay some high price for a pipe made the year I was born..
:lol!:
Chuck.. P.S. they are a nice looking brand..

Thanks!

My birth year Dunhill can be had for a meager $650 which makes VE's birth year pipe seem like a great deal considering his is 38 years older.

I have five Dunnies, all good smokers, and one exceptional. The best smoking one is a very poorly drilled Hungarian, go figure. Nobody does the classic English shapes better than Dunhill. That said, for an English pipe, I prefer Upshalls for quality of smoking.
