Hey guys I am very new to smoking pipes, heard that E. Hoffman Distiguished Gentleman was a good choice due to it slight aromatic quality and flavor. I decided to give it a go and man was that a mistake. Maybe the batch was bad or whatever, I felt the flavor was simply terrible in the sense that it made me kringe with distgust just tasted like something you smell at a gym. The aroma was decent but not great, In my opinion the entire experiencve was well... terrible. Okay so my question, I have tried Cornell & Diehl Founding Father thought it was great, I was trying to sample more tobaccos from them does anybody know some good choices? I am just trying to stay away from anything that may be similiar to the Hoffman blend, any ideas would be great.

Thanks

Engine #99, Plantation Evening, Tuggle Hall, Orient Express and if you like perique, Exclusive. These are all English types (latakia mixtures) except for the Exclusive.

thank you, could you tell me the difference in simple terms the difference between VA blends and english blends are?

I 've heard that reference to Latakia as smelling and tasting like gym "stuff" from folks not used to it. You might want to give some straight, light Virginia's a try till you get your palate "seasoned" a bit before you jump into the world of the English/Balkan/Scottish type of blends/mixtures. Smoking some nice sweet, light Va's ( no VaPers) will also help you in learning to smoke slowly so that you can get a fuller and smoother taste out of te tobacco you are smoking. I have tried that Hoffman blend/mixture you did not like and it was not to my liking but I did feel it was a good blend. I like their Spillman blend/mixture better as it has no aro topping added to it, it's a more straightforward tobacco flavor. Keep at it, take your time and you will "find" that tobacco :p

Hmmmm....often a beginning pipe smoker has difficulties with the flavored blends. I would have thought you had made a decent choice for a more natural flavored blend. Can you tell me what blends you like from the Gatlinburlier? I will add that everyone seems to go though periods where the like certain types of blends. Latakia isn't something that everyone likes the first few times they try it. But seasons change and tastes change. Down the road you may come to love those English blends. Developing a good technique will help and that comes with practice. Blends will be good and bad depending upon how they are packed in the pipe. It's a journey that we are all on, to learn what works for us.

I am a huge fan of the Burlier's Blend, Valley Vanilla, and Pistachio Peak. These are the best that I have tried from The Gatlinbulier.

I haven't tried either of those. But I think I understand that you really are a fan of flavored blends. Mostly burley, but some of which is probably Virginia. C&D has a huge list, as does L.J. Peretti in Boston. You might like C&D Autumn Evening if you like maple flavoring. They make a good coffee flavored blend who's name eludes me. You may also enjoy a blend with deer tongue in it. They have a new one called Gentlemen Callers.

There is a whole world of scented and aromatic blends. If you have tried anything from the English Lakeland district and liked it, they have a bunch of floral type scented blends available.
