The Edinburgh fringe festival has a 'funniest joke' competition every year, take a look at the top ten from this year.


1. Stewart Francis - "You know who really gives kids a bad name? Posh and Becks."

2. Tim Vine - "Last night me and my girlfriend watched three DVDs back to back. Luckily I was the one facing the telly. "

3. Will Marsh - "I was raised as an only child, which really annoyed my sister."

4. Rob Beckett - "You know you're working class when your TV is bigger than your book case."

5. Chris Turner - "I'm good friends with 25 letters of the alphabet… I don't know why."

6. Tim Vine - "I took part in the sun tanning Olympics - I just got Bronze."

7. George Ryegold - "Pornography is often frowned upon, but that's only because I'm concentrating."

8. Stewart Francis - "I saw a documentary on how ships are kept together. Riveting!"

9. Lou Sanders - "I waited an hour for my starter so I complained: 'It's not rocket salad."

10. Nish Kumar - "My mum's so pessimistic, that if there was an Olympics for pessimism… she wouldn't fancy her chances."

Sheesh, pop term/topical humor makes its way into otherwise good stuff here, too...hence, I had to look up "Posh & Becks" (hell if I knew what that was...I thought maybe it was a child's clothing outlet) whereas most of the rest of the jokes, anyone with a quick wit could understand. Tim Vine wins in my book.

Well, in the UK they are household names, its really difficult to avoid hearing about them. But it cheers me up a lot to know that in other countries they are as irrelevant as they should be.

I also live under a rock and don't watch "telly" because I have to avoid our own sh*thead household memes. You have no idea the peace and bliss it brings me when people gas on about some news headline/pop culture so-and-so and I have no clue. It's wonderful. :lol:

Well, yeah I agree. I watch shows that I like online but I haven't even had an aerial or dish for TV for about two years. I dislike the UK TV but I remember going to the states and thinking it was worse, but my god, you haven't seen abuse of an audience until you watch TV in Australia. I once watched a 22 min episode of friends that aired for over an hour because of all the ad breaks.

*shrug* I really liked the new Dr. Who, that was fun and UK-related.

You might have missed the dreck the US puts out if you think your productions are bad over there. :lol: We don't do well-made sci-fi here anymore. It's all shows about teens, gays, cartoons, who's-gonna-win singing/cooking competitions, garbage comedy, politics and dumbed-down-fake-o "science shows." :lol: There's great productions hidden out there, it's just a waste of time to expect broadcasters to bring them to the denizens of folks begging for their moron brainfix.

That's true, though I have a inkling that Simon Cowell and henchmen invented that entire diabolical genre of talent shows over here then exported them all over the world... so that might be our fault. As for science shows I am looking forward to the new Neil deGrasse Tyson version of Cosmos, hopefully that wont be dumbed down too much.

Why not just watch the original Carl Sagan Cosmos? It's pretty cool. Then again, I bitterly think the vying public hasn't been convinced yet that no, in fact, recreations of originals aren't actually better. :lol: The "entertainment machine" has for years instilled the notion "new is better." The public is only now beginning to wake up from that little bewitching concept, due in part because creative ideas from times past masquerading as "new and improved" are failing miserably much of the time. They'll be begging for new ideas soon enough.

Meanwhile, does the singing farm princess or urban dance troupe get voted to the next round, through love and Cinderella Story glory? Tune in next week!

Yeah I know, its crazy what people can find entertainment in. And don't get me wrong, I love Sagan, and I also like Tyson. But I don't think its fair to dismiss a new Cosmos as a pale imitation, or just another remake. It's science, and science moves on discovering new things. We have learned a lot since Sagan died in 96, and a lot of the time media and scientists just don't do a good job of bringing the information and the passion to the people. I'm personally looking forward to seeing it done again.

Dismiss? Merely a skeptical viewpoint of picking up the pan with a hot handle one too many times, my friend. Sagan and the serious interest the folks of that time period truly had in space made it great. I'd be surprised if they managed to make a film nearly as engaging, rather than just monosyllabic comparatives with stunning HD graphics to wow and please the masses for six seconds away from their iPads.

"Planet Earth" is the Cosmos of our time, so far. Unfortunately, it's highlights the inward nature of our interests, as it gets smaller and smaller (not too small, though, that'd swing the pendulum a bit too far past the new center, which is "us--the self") rather than outward and bigger. Not to mention, the music of the new Cosmos won't be so delightfully synthesizer-driven, I'd imagine. If it does, I'll give it a few more points. 8)

Time will tell! Either way, we don't have long to wait to find out, I believe its due to start airing later this year.
