Hey Kevin,

Oom Paul pipes have that initial attraction because of the extreme bend. However, that bend makes it very difficult to drill the air hole so that it hits the bottom of the bowl. As well, the pipes tend to smoke really wet due to the almost vertical airways.

They are also heavy. The shape fits a large man (subjective I know).

Other than that, the shape is fine..

I found an Oom Paul with even more beautiful X-grain at our local B&M. It's a BigBen, going for R465.00 (US$66.00) which is a good price. But the pipe is LARGE with a bowl two and a quarter inches deep. I can't see myself smoking such a lot of tobacco in one sitting!
