I'll pass the box off to Tin Man by the end of the week, but I've made my puts and takes so here they are:

Puts:

Rose of Latakia
Robert Lewis 123 mixture
Hamborger Beermeister
SG Balkan flake

Takes:

Escudo
SG Chsristmas mixture 2007
Stanwell Jubilee
Petersons sunset breeze

There are some very good tins in this box and choices were difficult, but I figured I'd take one aged goodie and the for the rest take stuff I'd probably never buy, make it fun! The Escudo has 4 years on it so I thought that would be an interesting one, but I'll tell you, there are some damned good tobaccos there still to be had including a 100G tin of Old Gowrie from 2001 and some 04 Christmas cheer. Happy hunting boys!

Still sampling.......

Fantastic pass PD! :D

Did you try the Dark Strong Kentucky?

I did, and it was sort of neutral, not dark and strong tasting, not bad at all but not great. Could have been a lot of different factors, I will smoke one more bowl before passing the box.

Who put the sample baggie of Escudo in the box? How old is it? This stuff is a real odd one for me. I have several tins of recent manufacture and one day it tastes great, the next, so-so. I'm smoking some of the sample Escudo right now and it's quite good.

I put the Escudo sample in the pass PD. It is probably around three years old.

Good un, PD.

I thought you said you would try Walnut and let us know,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hmmmm?

When I opened the "baggie" of Walnut,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it went "woooosh" like an aged tin. Must not have been opened before getting here.

I recommend leave it alone,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,allow it to age a little more. Ah fergeddaboutit,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it's loaded with preservatives,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Leroy scrapped off the 2087 expiration sticker.

:bounce: 'n carpet bagger.

That Escudo is yummy!

I will try the Walnut, it's going to get a fair shake.

Tomorrow Old Joe Krantz will accompany me to work.

Sampled the Heinrichs 169, it was OK. Kind of mild, the Syrian could have been Cyprian for all I could tell. Tasted pretty good, maybe my expectations were too high.

Is there any description of these Park Lane blends anywhere? Does Bonaquisti have a website?

PD,

I found the tin that I took the Escudo out of in my junk basket. I remember that I had just recently opened it and smoked one bowl out of it. I put the rest in the baggie as a sample for the box pass.

The Escudo tin is dated 12/04.

OK, here goes.

Walnut!! Possibly the most mentioned tobacco on BoB  Hey, I won't knock that, if JP swears by it, he swears by it. Lucky guy to find a very cost friendly smoke that provides such pleasure.

To get right to the jist of it, I'd say without a doubt that it ain't bad. In fact, were I to find myself in a situation where I had no tobacco on me and I wandered into a shop and found a shelf full of only drug store blends (capt black, PA, 1/2 & 1/2 etc) and there was a tub of Walnut there, that's the one I would grab. It's much better than the others for sure. I wouldn't stock up on it as I've done the whole drug store blend thing and it really didn't ring my bell, but I've definitely tried many, many so-called "Fine" blends that were a lot worse than this.

I found the initial few minutes to be the best, giving a taste of turkish with a suggestion of latakia, and then the burley and Va's kind of took over. The burley element comes across as sort of cigarette-like and the Va's did bite a little, but it was not an unsatisfactory smoke. The flavor definitely changed mid bowl and then again at the end, but it was never bad, and like I said, the first few minutes were pretty nice.

I think the best cheap smoke out there is Stokkebye Cube Cut, especially with some age. I think it's even a bit cheaper than Walnut, but it's also a lot more one dimensional. Along with Edgeworth Ready Rub I'll give Walnut it's due respect.

P'Daddy,,,,,what part did signature notes in the pipe have to do with your experience?

Did the pipe respect you in the morning?

Well, I chickened out and didn't smoke it in my Bang. That pipe has only had Astley's 109, WBCDF and FVF smoked in it, not about to change that. Smoked the Walnut in a Stanwell Vario 191, a work pipe, cuz I smoked it at work yesterday where most of my smoking takes place anyhow.
I believe I've only been smoking MVF in this pipe as of late so I don't think there would be any ghosts there to give a false sense of flavor. I did distinctly hear the pipe say "What the f**k?" after putting the initial match to it.......

Nice try TJ but no cigar!

There is no need to be envious of another pipe smoker that has found something that truly satisfies him/her day in and day out. Just keep chasing the dream yourself and maybe one day you will find it. Some folks never will but hey, that is life! :D

However, MVF is so good and I've smoked so much of it through that pipe that the lingering essence of MVF could account for the fleeting pleasant taste that the single bowl of Walnut exhibited

Well, this has been a great pass. Lots of good blends to try. I think I've had enough latakia to last me a while.

Puts:
Yenidje Highlander
McConnell's Latakia
Blackpoint - less 1 bowl
McConnell's Latakia - open for sample
Louisiana Perique - Sample
Diebel's Oriental Mixture - house name for Stokkebye's Proper English?

Take:
Christmas Cheer
Haddos Delight
Hermit XVC - open

Sampled:
Embarcadero - Full VA/Oriental. Sweet & very spicy. tin aroma = HOTW, same Vas as Filmore?. Great way to taste Izmir leaf. mid-bowl it settles down nicely.

Maltese Falcon - Bright, not heavy. Like the old classic style. Sharp with new latakia. Should age better.

Lancers Slice: Little like Old Ironsides. Burns well. Big smoke. Latakia is sharp but settles down.

Maduro Cut Cake - Med english + cigar. Cigar mellows the blend like a cavendish would. Cegar leafr most notable at 1st light. I could have sworn it has Syrian Latakia. Harsh mouth feel. Maybe I tasted some unsweetened cavendish, but could have been ghosts from the pipe, not sure.

XVC - Smoother than Maduro C.C., but very similar. More uniform than Maduro C.C. Some big pieces.

Arcadia -- easy to light. Smoked it in a meer. Same vein as Embarcadero., but sweeter. 5100 based, but orientals cut the cloyingly sweet Vas. just right.

Decoy - Just right VaPer. red & a pinch of perique, not too much. Less perique than 2015.

SOT E - really nice blend. very good, esp for bulk. Strong & smooth.

Burley Slice - took sample for the road.

2030 -- Took sample for the road.

Thanks guys. I really enjoyed this pass. Maybe more so than any previous pass I've participated in. Will ship the box in the morning.
