Greetings, brethren.

Earlier this week I pulled the trigger on my fist system pipe, a standard Peterson shape 309 which can be seen here:

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/171849590/Vintage_K_P_Petersons_Signed_No_309_Pipe.html

I was intrigued to discover that this is likely the pipe favoured by Basil Rathbone in the Sherlock Holmes series and smoked by Lee Van Cleef in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly (the stummel, at least). An eclectic movie heritage for a pipe, if ever there was one.

After the usual spruce-up I decided to do something that I have had in mind for a while. My only other P-lip is a straight pre-republic London & Dublin, and I find that the upward draft of the P-lip tends to give me a tender spot on my palate, if I'm not careful to move it around a bit. This especially so when I am clenching. I find the smoke a bit too concentrated. Given the age of the Pre-rep, though, I was reluctant to go hacking away at it.

Having gotten this one at a reasonable price, however, I decided to give my idea a go. I'm no good at posting pics here, so I'll try and explain what I did.

Essentially I took a small drill bit, the same diameter on the smoke hole in the P-lip, inserted it in the hole and then twisting by hand with downward pressure, wore away the rearmost 'ramp' at the rear of the smoke hole, which tends to direct the smoke directly upward. The effect is that the hole is no longer round and directed directly upward, but more oval toward the rear of the lip. The exit angle is now more parallel with the terminal angle of the stem, although not 100% so. I would say still about 25-30 degrees or so upward, if you get my meaning.

So this morning a fired it up with a bowl of Erinmore Flake (the only flake available to me locally), having read that the relatively long, narrow bowl lends itself to Flake baccys. Packed it fold and stuff (he said with the air of an experienced pipe man). By the way, on the Erinmore tin note debate: It's dried apricots, no question. Anyone who has opened a fresh packet of this South African product will attest to this. . . . but I digress.

So there I sat and smoked, imagining by turns that I was Angel Eyes, surveying the vistas of the Old West, or the great Holmes himself wistfully pondering a particularly perplexing case, and thereby connecting with my brethren on either side of the pond.

So the verdict. Well Messrs. Kapp and Peterson certainly knew what they were about when they came up with this baby. At the risk of cliché, she smoked cool, sweet and dry all the way down. Fine white ash and all, and not a hint of gurgle, even though the Erinmore was straight out of the tin. (Dottle? What is this 'dottle' of which you earthlings speak?)

My one concern about the systems was that they have to be broken down after each smoke to clean the sump, and I have become more lazy of late, preferring to smoke my 9MM filter pipes with an adapter so most times I can just run a pipe cleaner through after smoking. But that flake gave me a languid hour-long smoke, with a couple of relights, so I figure it's well worth it. More so, if it continues to smoke so well.

In terms of my modification, I have to declare it a success, for me at least. The smoke is now directed more toward the middle of the mouth as apposed to directly onto the palate, yet not directly onto the tongue, allowing a full appreciation of the flavour. The tongue can nevertheless be placed into the smoke stream to pick up added nuances. Quite possibly this has been thought of and done before, and I have simply reinvented the wheel. Either way it works for me.

In terms of Peterson systems, I believe I am a convert. Any unwanted system Petes can be dispatched forthwith to the following address. . . . .

Many thanks to SpeedyPete for encouraging me to pull the trigger on this one.

As usual, any comments welcome.

Mark.

Mark, some re-marks:

1) My congratulations on your classic Peterson product.
2) As a product and inhabitant of the Old West myself, I find myself reaching for the venerable old Missouri Meerschaum cob. If for anything else, they're lightweight enough to actually scale the vistas (be that on horseback or by boot) with pipe clenched in jaw, with enough mandibular stamina left for a pleasant sunset. There might be debates about the time period Peterson and even briar itself was made abundant enough for any villain or hero to have a smoke versus what the movies suggest, the cob was probably readily available and a practical choice. "It ain't nothin' fancy, like a gunnysack dress."
3) Erinmore Flake is obviously scented with Juicy Fruit chewing gum, if you are familiar with such a product.
4) Reading your posts brings delight to anyone who appreciates educated use of the English language.

Great post! I have a 309 that I disfigured a little by simply cutting off the p-lip "extension" so that I now have a somewhat normal looking button, and I did it for the same reason that you did. Strange thing is, I have a Mark Twain p-lip that doesn't bother me at all. Go figure.

Yes, system pipes are a pain in the butt to clean up after each smoke, are stinky as hell while doing so, are messy, etc., but I think they're worth it. I'd probably buy another. They were good enough for Mr. Clemens, probably the greatest pipe smoker who ever lived.

Just a note on the 309 specifically: I swear I read somewhere that the shape has been discontinued. The company does answer e-mails, so I suppose one could merely ask.

I don't have the article anymore but in it Van Cleef stated that he smoked Wellingtons in that movie so that if he dropped it on set he wouldn't be out one of his Petersons.

Dear Kyle:

1) Thank you.
4) You are too kind. I'm just an old cop with a high school education, a love of reading and a spell checker, but thanks nevertheless.
3) It's dried apricots.
2) My dear boy, you must realise that born and bred in Cape Town, SA, I grew up on a diet of spaghetti westerns shown at matinees on Saturday afternoons. Consequently my Old West has little or nothing to do with the truth. Mine is the West of Sergio Leone, where the wind really does sound like the white noise of blank audio tape being hand wound at varying speeds. Where gunfighters do not level and aim their weapons, but fan the hammer from the hip, trigger depressed, with deadly accuracy, and where the hills in the distance have a decidedly Mediterranean feel about them. Where the women are either harlots or virgins and where the minor characters lips are somewhat out of sync with the words emanating from them.

Now don't get me wrong, I love my cobs, and they are no doubt quite in order for the farming stock and peasantry (like me). But the venerable Mr. Van Cleef in long coat, starched white shirt and bow tie, with a reed stem cob poking out of his gob? Really? That would not do.

(Say it aint so, Lee, say it aint so!)

Richard,

Thanks. Yes, it seems the 309 has been discontinued, at least under that designation.

On the 309 and the Good, the Bad and the Ugly:

It is postulated by someone on this thread that he took a Pete 309 stummel and banged a Wellinton stem into it, creating some kind of 'Frankenpipe', (something about the Wellinton's bowl lacking the required height):

http://www.puff.com/forums/vb/general-pipe-forum/254636-who-made-pipe-good-bad-ugly.html

On closer inspection I do think it is a Wellington. But still, if Lee was a Pete man, that's close enough for me.

Cheers, Bros, and thanks again.

Mark.

Great stuff Mark!!

Btw, since when is Erinmore Flake available locally and where, if I'm allowed to ask?

Juicy fruit. Unless you have some funky, processed apricots goin' on in the S. Hemisphere.

Odd that we're from vastly different worlds but seem to have gotten the same kind of edu-mah-cation, one could say. :D

Be well and smoke well down there.

Pete,

From time to time, on a very inconsistent basis it's available at a tobacconist near to Charl and I.

And no, not the flake, Pete. Dried apricots.

Now tell Kyle that is what a fresh tin of it smells like. He seems to keep banging on about some American chewing gum or something

Oh, and a note to new system pipe smokers, and fellow idiots like me (if there are such):

Don't turn your system pipe upside down to dump as while smoking. It's a F#@&-up.

Let's be honest here.

Cheers to not inverting a system (or just about any Pete) while smoking... I'm sure all of us have done it once. Those that haven't... Heh. :D

You're not talking about Alan, are you?

Erinmore Flake aroma? Pure, purest of American chewing gum, sitrus flavour, with a whiff of old leather and a freshly washed G-string, dipped in Stay Soft.

Btw, Stay Soft is the only male contraceptive available which is 100% failproof.

I don't know, I find marriage to be quite successful in that regard.

I don't know, Pete. The vasectomy I got worked pretty well. Not to be outdone, 2 years later my wife required a full hysterectomy. Now that's fullproof!

Living the singular life works as well ! I'm glad this thread was hijacked. p-lips are soooo boring!!

On the subject of Peterson Systems, I have one, and I am not a fan. Mine even gurgles!

I do admire that fact that you modified your P-lip. Whenever I have smoked a Peterson with a P-lip, I too have found myself constantly adjusting the position of the pipe to keep the smoke from streaming upward towards the top of my palate. P-lips are also a poor choice for clenching.

Erinmore Flake? I do not get the Juicy Fruit. Sorry Kyle.

Stokkebye Twist Flake, now that hints at Juicy Fruit. Get your skis shined up!

Yeah!!  Back on topic!!  I have 6 Pete's and only 1 still has it's original P-lip mainly because they are too THICK and rounded for my denture comfort!! One is a Pre-Republic System 314 that my father bought in London back in '46 and if I get too enthusiastic with it it sounds like a faucet so i don't smoke it often as MOST full bent pipes do this for me !!  All the other Pete's I have, have replacement fishtails except my two Rosslares that came with them. It was interesting what the bro did to his but one can get replacement fishtail bits for ALL their styles FROM PETERSON at a reasonable cost !  And as far as the Juicy Fruit thing, for myself, I only found the Mixture to have any Jucy Fruit aroma and flavor with the Flake just a nice sweet Va Bur, JMHO

Monbla's happiness with the topic material is all I care about, after all. I can't wait until he digresses himself by finding out new and creative ways to present the word "opinion."

That said, I don't even think Erinmore Flake actually smells/tastes like Juicy Fruit, it's just a thing a few guys vehemently were stuck on when doing what pipe guys do: debating the stupidest crap ever for the stupidest reasons--just because.

To be honest I can't peg exactly what the scent is. It's not pineapple (as some suggest from the tin logo, which rather than flavor suggestion is a strange mark of hospitality), it's not apricot (sorry, Puffer Mark, I'd rather not know than be wrong    ), and it's not that horrid ski-shining gum.

What I do enjoy is Erinmore Flake once in a while.

Canned peaches? <img class="emojione" alt="?" title="" src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/emojione/assets/png/1f937.png?v=2.2.7"/>

Monbla is a good motivation to use birth control. Imagine that guy showing up to Thanksgiving every year.
