Being fairly new to pipesmoking, when I saw people on youtube with these rubbers on their pipes I thought "What a great idea" and got some and used them for a while. But I like the feel off my teeth on the stem of the pipe,yes there are tooth marks on some of my pipes. So I'm somewhere in the middle on this topic.
I don't own any high grade pipes. I think when I do I'll use the rubbers on them, for a while. But gee, it does seem a little strange to read about how hard these talented pipemakers labor making these pipe stems only to have me throw a rubber on it when I get it. That's like buying a Van Gogh and putting a plexiglass shield over it. I guess, when I know a pipe is mine, that it smokes,looks, and feels good, then the rubber's coming off.
Oh, one other caveat, I only clench my pipes while I'm driving. When I relaxing on my deck I tend to sip my pipe more.
