Today I got an 8oz and 2 2oz tins of penzance. The 8oz was dried completely. I am currently trying to re-hydrate it by using a humidor puck and a damp paper towel in a zip-lock. Anyone have positive experience in re-hydrating baccy?

I used the damp paper towel on a folded business card trick and it worked well.

Sorry to hear about your Penzance.

Here's what I do to re-hydrate tobacco.

Get a Glad or Ziplock disposable storage container and put no more than an ounce of tobacco at a time into it. With flakes or a cut like Penzance, it's best not to stack the flakes up in the container or just pile them in because you want good even distribution of moisture to the tobacco.

Moisten a paper towel and drape it over the edges of the disposable storage container and put the lid on it. The paper towel should never be "wet," only just barely damp and it should never make contact with the tobacco. Check on the tobacco every 4-6 hours, gently turning the flakes in the process. Re-hydrating tobacco can take several hours, and it's not uncommon to have to re-moisturize the towel or to let batches sit overnight.

This process is like smoking brisket or pork shoulder. Low and slow is the key to yielding best results.

Good luck

I can not remove it from the tray as it will desintegrate into dried ribons and dust.

I like this delicious and apt metaphor.

D&B hit the nail on the head, I have used the method many times and it works each and every time. I use distilled water, but it's probably not absolutely necessary.

Two things, first, have you ever smoked Penzance before? Its always going to be crumbly, you never get a sold flake out of a tin, at least I can't. So don't worry too much about preserving the flake.

Second, if you really think the tobacco is so dry that it will disintegrate if you touch it, then start with a container large enough to drop the whole tray in. Don't worry about it having a top at this point. Then cover the top the damp paper towel(s) and secure with rubber bands. Then, after the tobacco has rehydrated some, remove the flakes from the tray, and do the same thing until you get the moisture level you want.

Penzance was one of my staple tobaccos from 2005 to 2010. Back then I rubbed everything out. Once it is damp enough to remove from the container I will. I have some jars standing by.

I am wondering if you could pop the whole tray into an air-tight plastic container with a Boveda pack? As you can safely sit those right on top of tobacco..

If I have to rehydrate baccy I use an empty baccy tin. put tobacco in dampen a paper towel, fold it a couple of times. lay over top of tin, force plastic lid on. check it the next day, repeat if necessary.

I've had this situation before. Just lay the whole tray in a large Tupperware (or similar) bowl/tray. I fill plastic baggies with wet p-towels, lying them in the bowl around the tobacco tray. Seal the top; let it sit for a day or two. Check at least once a day, adjusting moisture as necessary. The 'baccy will absorb moisture to the level of humidity inside the container. may take a few days, but it works...for me anyway :suspect: FTRPLT

With all the good replies it sounds like you've got things covered.
I think I would notify the retailer and tell them what happened so
they can check there stock for bags with pinholes. I know I would hate
to get any of my baccy dried out like Bull Durham.

I did and he offered a refund, but I already opened it and can rehydrate.

Man! I won't ask you the forum, but is it the same one you had trouble with one other time recently? You need to deal with guys on BoB, if we've had any trouble on here I am unaware of it.

I dont think it was me that had an issue, but I do remember someone having a problem with bad tobacco that smelled moldy.

I'm a heathen, but sometimes if I've going to leave something jarred for a while, I just spritz or dirp some water on it then jar it. I guess this won't work for you since you can't remove form the tray, but the jar seals it and it eventually evens out. It works quickly if you leave it near a heat vent.

It was me that had some dry out on its own because I didn't have it jared. Ive fixed that one with the paper towel on a business card.

Don't feel too bad Jeremy, look what I am doing today... :x

I think someone at Germain needs a lesson on how to use the tinning machine, as well as a firm back-hand.
