I did exactly the same thing, wise enough to lean against the trunk side of a large branch, but didn't realize how much it would jump up when the weight of the cut end dropped off. I was able to let the extension ladder drop while hanging onto the branch and had a kid that was helping me get the ladder out of the way and drop the 12 feet or so to the ground without injury, (other than to my ego!).
