Ghosts

I am a relative newbie. Returned to the pipe early last year. I just picked up some Samuel Gawith Commonwealth - which I REALLY like - this weekend. I enjoyed a bowl in a good briar early this evening. A couple hours later I lit up a bowl of a favorite local house english blend. I'm sure that I clearly smelled, even tasted, the Commonwealth. I have smoked English Blends almost exclusively in this briar with an occasion bowl of Prince Albert without any noticeable ghosting. Is this something I should expect? Should I dedicate pipes to specific blends if I want their true flavor? I just figured that since I was sticking with basicaly English - I smoke aros only in a mere or cob - there wouldn't be a ghosting issue. Would a pipe cleaner or two between bowls eliminate the issue?

I just realized this is a long question. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read it and reply at all.

Many pipers dedicate pipes to specific types of blends for this very reason, I do not, but that's just a personal preference.

I find that, possibly due to the fact that I don't dedicate pipes, I often need to smoke a tin of a new blend to really find its characteristics. This is, as I stated a personal preference and that really is the gist of the matter. You should decide your preferences and go that route, as there really is no right or wrong to it.

I know several who keep a few cobs on hand for sampling new blends and a few that use Meers the same way, again, no right or wrong.

As to the ghosting. Many times a good cleaning will solve the problem. One gent I am familiar with recommends a good bowl of 5 Brothers to remove ghosts. Usually a few bowls of your original blend will solve the problem, but some resort to a thorough scrubbing, using cotton or salt and alcohol.

I believe I would try a few bowls of your regular blend first and see if that doesn't solve the problem.

I smoke a lot of flakes, but Erinmore flake has stayed in that pipe like no other, not that I've tried to get rid of it, I just leave that pipe to that tobacco. My friend however ghosted a pipe with some tobacco, and just smoked his normal tobacco a lot and that seemed to get rid of it.
