Hey brothers,

I was just browsing the PAD section and came across several posts in which there was some confusion about my name. Needless to say, I'm not surprised. I chose my name in a way that only those who knew me a bit would know it's not really my name. For me, relationships with people are important. I want my pipe selling to be more than just sending briar out the door. I hope to be able to connect with people in at least some small meaningful way as often as I can. I wanted to name my pipes in a way that only those who knew me a bit would know why they were named the way they were.

Seeing how I feel like I know you guys, at least a bit, and have hopefully interacted with most of you in some small meaningful way, it makes me want to come clean with the history of the name "Growley".

When I felt it was time to start making pipes seriously, I knew that I'd need to come up with a good name. I wanted my pipes to be as associated with my name as they were disassociated with it, meaning I wanted my name to be there somewhere, so it would make sense to someone who knew the secret, but I didn't want it to take on a branding image like Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren. I didn't want the pipes to be about "me". I still don't :D So, with my full name being Brian G. Rowley, I decided to do a hybrid name and go with Growley. It's a name that's a bit of a brand and a name.

So for what it's worth, whether you say you've got one of Rowley's pipes or a Growley, you'd be right!

I know this will only be interesting to some, so I apologize in advance for all of you who have read this far and wished you could get that two minutes back :D

Brian

I got the connection a while back, but thanks for the detailed response.

In any case I'll be sure to look to you in the future for an artisan pipe. Your work precedes you!

Thanks! Hit me up any time. I'd be honored to make a pipe for you.

No worries Brian. It took less than a minute to read! :D :D :D

Good story by the way.

yeah it is interesting, thanks, I would have probably said I have one of Brian's pipes ;)

No way, you need to either make up some fake Euro spelling (like you're in an 80s hair band) or something more posh...more... "artsy"...

"Brÿÿan Rôôulee." You'll thank me later. :D

Or like a Brit poet of indeterminate gender: B. Ryan-Growleigh. But then all the pipes would have to be billiards or bulldogs with square-cut rims...no chamfering on the inner rim allowed.

Or that cutesie-pie thang the terminally cute chicks do. When it first started, Growley would never do; it'd have to be Growli. But now it's all, like, sooo Growlee, dude.

Sorry, Brian. Just havin' some fun, Bro'.

:joker:

That...was an epic funny.

Just teasin' ya Brian. ;)

Or you could make all your blasted pipes as Growley's and the smooth one's as Rowley's  That'd stir the pot up nice

I'm going to have to consider "Brÿÿan Rôôulee." It just might work. I'd probably have to double my prices though so the pipes were worthy of the name.

Plus, the stamp-maker would charge you a lot more for accents and umlauts. That's the price of fame, baby! :p

Grövley. Pipes to be smoked while wearing a thick sweater and trying to catch a legendary giant cod.

Just teasing. Thank you for the post, I'm a total fan of yours too.

You'll only be able to double the price if they are made at " ... le Atelier de Rooulee" and you find some bogus link to a long dead famous (only in France) pipe master from the Butz-Choqain part of France. But hey, with Google ANYTHING is doable hese days

Buddy, as long as you keep making pipes as gorgeous as this: http://growleypipes.com/cross-grain-canadian you can call yourself anything you like, I'm good with it.
Yeah, this pipe seems to be so gorgeous that it just won't sell. People must be intimidated by it's superior gorgeousness.... All sarcastic-ness aside, I really thought this one would go fast. I've contemplated taking if off the market and just lighting it up. But I figure it won't hurt to actually have a few pipes available in case I ever make it to a show. I'm still surprised by what goes fast, and what sits.

Thanks for the compliments Kirk.
