There are certain things a guy just seems to need to feel that he's got "The right stuff", the stuff that he feels is part of him. These things are accoutrements to "The Man", or to be more precise, to the image that the man has of himself. Often of higher quality in their individual categories and usually items that the guy had to work and save to acquire, these things vary widely among men in general but tend to gather in clusters among different social groups and dispositions. For instance, model trains in older retired guys and skateboards in twenty somethings.

So what are the "Guy things" in our social order? Not the 'Can't realistically be done' things like a Ferrari, but things we can reasonably hope for and attain.

I'll start by offering up what, to me, are those things befitting a Man and worth paying good coin for. (note: these are not snob items but fine things hoped to attain, many of which I'm still hoping to attain)

Good briar pipes and good tobacco (obviously!).

A good rechargeable foil shaver.

A nice automatic watch (the quality of which usually rises with age, going from Seiko to Omega to Rolex or Breguet as age and income progress).

Good clothing. Individual style not important, but whatever the style, it's not bought in discount stores and often requires some tailoring. Not everything in your wardrobe mind you, but at least some of the collection being a fine suit of clothes or well designed casual wear.

Really nice Italian leather dress shoes 8) .

A set of fitted golf clubs, and probably a Cameron Putter.

A split cane fly rod and little English reel.

A good over/under shotgun.

Good quality sunglasses.

A den with a leather chair and lots of books.

A fun automobile. It may be a new truck or a Japanese sports car, but it's probably attainable at some point. Mine would be a Porsche Cayman or a Nissan 370Z.



What are the guy things that keep you planning into the future to acquire?

Yep, you pretty much hit all of them for me. The only thing I would add is a nice television and sound system, and this is because I play a lot of video games and like to have a great picture. I don't know if that fits into this category though, most items you mentioned can be passed down and don't become superseded by new technology.

Wait, thought of something else, a good liquor collection: high end scotch, bourbon, tequila, rum, vodka. Perfect for sipping or making incredible drinks.

I guess I'm simpler than some in what I desire. I have a penchant for the quality or perceived quality of the "old" and simple things. I really have no desire for modern "man stuff" except for my phone.

Yeah, and I think that's all part of the "Quality" factor we start looking for. I mean, anyone can buy a Timex watch, a bic razor and a $149 suit, and those things are serviceable and practical and there isn't a damned thing wrong with them. But, the guy who lives with them day in and day out starts wanting for better things, and those things usually are a reflection of who the guy is and who he wants to be. Quality. When you own a Timex you know you got your money's worth and you're fine with that, but when you saved 2 years for a Rolex you plan to hand it down to your grandkids and brag about the fact that it can be handed down.

To be fair, some fine inexpensive things are handed down too and turn out to be of fine quality!


It would have been easy to keep going but I made my list kind of off the top of my head and stopped at 10 on purpose. I could easily add more, like a little collection of good scotch whiskey and maybe a Martin or Takamine guitar 8)

There ya go! Man, a Dupont pipe lighter! That would be nice. I have a 15 year old Grundig Yacht Boy short wave with SSB and I still use it all the time. It's not a tube radio, but still very well built and I'm thrilled to have it.

A fine musical instrument (and the determination to learn and practice.)

And a corollary to clothes: A man ought to own his own tux, and he ought to be able to tie his own bow tie.

My dad taught me to tie a bow tie, I have never met anyone else under the age of 50 who can do that. Hell, its rare enough now to meet someone my own age who can tie a regular tie.

It's just a shoelace bow! But... flat. (I wear bow ties to work almost every day.)

Omega for the watch (hell james bond wears one!)

This may seem wierd but im a fan of the 70's and im young but id love to have a el camino fixed up raised in the back end and have a nice big block in it taking it to muscle class. Or id love a gto judge pretty much in the similar fashion.

I currently use a quattro with shick gel but when im older id like to go back to a straight razor with a mug and cakes along with a good solid brush.

Id like to be able to rock a tweed hat

Id like to have enough money to have decent gentlemens suits and slacks that go well with sweaters and button downs as I grow older.

Id like to afford nice bourbon to sip on and have a substantial book collection weather they are hard covers or paperback i dont care i just love books. I guess when it comes down to it you just need to have time to read! I guess thats what id really want!

Yep!! This is all oabout the toys and gadgets we like, and to see if there's a theme among us. As we're all pipesmokers I was just curious if we liked other guy stuff collectively besides pipes.

I am simple minded as you most know by now so, the one thing that defines me and that I DON'T EVER not have in my possession is my Case Moose pattern pocket knife. Been carrying one since I was at least six years old. Never walk out the door without it!
