Here is a poker I made for friend a little while back, hickory and acrylic. The bowl is natural with a wax finish. Carved and dyed faux bark rim. Thanks for looking, Gonzo

Very nice looking pipe, Gonzo.

How do hickory pipe smoke, compared to briars?

Thank you! I have 2 hickory pipes I smoke regularly and find them both excellent. The first couple bowls if you are smoking something light and sweet like VA you may detect some added woody flavor, but not much, and probably not at all if you are an english fan. I do work with briar as well.

Cheers,

Thanks Brewdude! I have seen quite few hickory pipes for sale, and at least some that date back to the 50's. I started working with it kind of by chance. Glad I did too.

Hiram-2011 Thank you, It was a really fun piece to create.

That's a beauty! You do some fine work. The contrast with the stem is very striking!

Thank you Dottleman! This is in a friend's collection, I have heard back from him several times with all good things to say about how it smokes.

Nice looking smoker there! Well done! I find that a good hardwood pipe is every bit as good as a briar, how do you say, IMHO?

Thank you! I tend to agree, I have 2 hickory pipes I smoke regularly with zero complaints.

Very much appreciated @Fatman, this pipe was a lot of fun to create. I am actually working on another hickory smoker for a different friend starting sometime this week.

That's pretty sharp, I like the natural finish. Nice work.

Nice job Gonzo! Wish I had the time and skills to create a beauty like that!

@Mark and Dutch , I appreciate the kinds words from both of you. Thank you

Very nice work Gonzo. I really like the waxed finish; very natural looking. Like your maker's mark too!

Here is another hickory pipe I made a while back, this one uses a balsa filter and has a bunch of fancy trims etc. Partial rustication, and light dye work on the bowl. Enjoy! Gonzo
