There are so many I want to try and eventually I will buy some to cellar, but how many should I limit it to for opened tins?

I usually keep two aros opened, one that's a favorite and one that I'm checking out. One English, and one Va or Va/Per... so four for me. Sometimes one or two more.

I have no self-restraint. I've got about 15 open now (not counting assorted samples of other stuff).

One, PB?  I don't know if that makes you a masochist or a sadist, but either way it sounds more like a dungeon than a tobacco cellar.

This came up about a month ago (sort of)...there might be some answers here that interest you: Linky Link

FWIW, my thoughts were (and still are):

Excluding any baggies or partial tins that I've been given/traded as samples, I only keep at most 5 tins/jars open at a time.

1 Virginia/VaPer/VaCav
1 Latakia/English
1 Burley based
2 additional blends (usually stronger/weaker VaPers or Latakias than the two I've got open, but also the occasional aromatic, Lakeland, seasonal blend, or something that I just randomly get an urge to try)

I find that if I've got all the major genres covered, plus a few other blends available to dip into, I'm almost always able to reach for something I'd like to smoke. I tend to smoke tins/jars to completion before tiring of them and needing to open something else, so that helps...if you're the type that likes a lot of variety, I would imagine my approach would be exceptionally unsatisfying!
At the moment, that amounts to:
Va/VaPer = NONE (soon to be GLP Telegraph Hill)
Lat = Frog Morton ATP
Burley = Park-Lane Fireside
MiscA = Erinmore Mixture
MiscB = NONE

I guess he doesn't rotate, just smokes the Crap out of one tin then moves on to another "one" tin. I would like my cellar to consist of 5 rotating open tins... Prob double that now. Getting it down.

At the most, tin wise, 3 with 3 bail top jars with my Red Va/ketchup that I smoke out of daily. I don't need to smoke many varieties these days as I've found what works for me !! :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

Are the bail top jars better than the ball mason jars?
For long term storage, no. However, I like Fido bail tops for tobacco that I am currently smoking because they're wider and easier to dip in to.

Thanks DB

Technically speaking, I keep no open tins. Once popped, into a jar it goes!!! I don't/haven't popped many tins lately because I have so many jars of aging bulk to tap. I just let the tins/packages keep aging!!! I will sometimes keep opened tins stacked in a large wide-mouthed glass jar. Or you might try keeping your opened tins in a large Tupperware container. Just watch the moisture level.
FWIW...FTRPLT

If we are counting mason jars I'm lying about 1.. I don't know how many of those I have 'open' I put in six from PDiddy.. Then there's 3-4 GH&Co from Pipetongue.. 1 from Tony Ferrell. And 2 of mine... So 14 counting the tin open... I don't usually open tins, they are for the most part gifts.

Counted my open tins now...12

I love to rotate all the time, same as with my pipes.

I'm 70 years old and I'm enjoying life to the fullest, also as far as my smoking is concerned :D

None of my family smoke a pipe, so all my stuff will go to waist if I pass away during the night :(

I try to restrain myself but its too hard. Currently I have 12 open and I'm pretty sure if I make any more purchases in the next little while I will tear into those too. My philosophy is that anything could happen. Like, I could be struck by lightning tomorrow or a building fire could engulf my collection. What a tragedy it would be if I hadn't sampled my new tin of Orlick GS or Semois. So inevitably I pry the lid off and feed my curiosity. Also, I make the following case for having many tins open. It allows you to naturally find out where your tastes lie. Although I have several tins open I inevitably reach for MM 965 and Skiff mixture. I definitely like most of the other tins I have open but these ones just seem to call me when browsing my collection. Now I know what to buy in the future.

Practicing extream restraint and puffing like mad to get rid of some odds and ends I'm down to 17 open containers. That includes tins, mason jars, ziplocks, and a big tub-O-Carter Hall. Life is to short to smoke just 16 :lol:
Mike.
