Almost never. I much prefer the top half to two thirds of the bowl and seldom smoke the bottom one third to one quarter.

My rule is pretty simple--I smoke until I'm not enjoying the taste anymore. I don't smoke a pipe or cigars to torture myself, so if it's starting to taste unpleasant, it's time to clean up! That point is usually the last 1/3 to 1/4 for both pipes and cigars.

I try to smoke the whole bowl all the way, if it's nasty down there I move on to other things.
I only push through nasty baccy at the bottom if I am breaking in the pipe.
