This scenic corner of Arizona where I live is on the borders of both Mexicos...New and The Republic of. The distance to actual tobacco and pipe stores is measured in hours of travel. I am reluctantly considering the use of the internet for purchases in support of my habit and avocation. Are there reliable resonable legitimate tobaccanists online and have you been satisfied with this as a source for tobacco and pipes? At this point I find myself mildly skeptical.
Thanks for any advice!

I've had very satisfactory experiences with Smokingpipes, Pipes & Cigars, Mars Cigars, and WVSmokeshop. Each has its own style and areas of strength, but all are on the up-and-up, in my experience.

It seems that most of us here use on-line shops a fair amount, and seldom do we hear of a horror story. I've ordered from all the ones listed in previous posts and never had a problem with any of them. Great prices and selection.

Agreed!

On my first internet tobacco order, I was skeptical too. To relieve your fears there is a listing of pipe and tobacco dealers with websites that have proven by members of BoB to be reliable and worthy people to deal with. Prices, shipping costs and availability of certain brands are the main things that separate them. You can find this listing on the home page under the "Links" in the "Commercial" section.

The only thing I don't like about online commerce is wating for the package, when I order something I want ASAP!

I have had excellent service from Cup Of Joes. Very friendly, very fast. One time, I ordered a Bjarne pipe, and it arrived and I was less than thrilled with it. (Poor drilling, stem fit was too tight) They let me send it back (unsmoked, of course) with no questions, and even were ready to refund my money, not just give a credit. Of course, I took the credit... Also, Iwan Ries out of Chicago is excellent, as is Smoking Pipes.

In addition to the fine recommendations above, I would add: Boswell's. Gray Fox, Peretti's, Park Lane, The Piperack, Pipes2smoke, Pipeworks & Wilke, and Pulvers Briar. I have had nothing but fine service from them all. FTRPLT

Ditto what Jim said... Go to the links section and pick out a shop.

If it relieves your fears...
I have had nothing but success from www.smokingpipes.com www.pipesandcigars.com and www.cupojoes.com

www.marscigars.com is a good little site run by a friend of many on the board.

A tactic I use (and I assume everyone else does) is to wait until I have a large enough order to get the free shipping most offer for certain sized orders.. It sounds like a lot but 8-10 tins or 2-3 lbs of bulk will usually get you qualified.

All of the above are good. I have only dealt with Pipes and Cigars, 4 Noggins, and Smoking Pipes and they were prompt.

I've bought almost entirely via the Internet for the past 11 years. I've had no problems with anyone, whether they be shops or makers. Everyone has always been more than accommodating.

One other thing I do, is if I'm traveling, and see a shop, I stop in. If I like what I see, I've simply called them or emailed and bought tobacco from them that way some time later. Never had a problem with mailing.

I am loyal to Smoking Pipes because they don't hassle me about writing a check.

Pipes and Cigars will accept a check on phone orders, but they have a way of talking down to you when you call them and tell them you are sending a check. I posted of this in another forum and someone went crying to the owner who joined to apologize and assure me that it would never happened again. But last time I tried to order (from the same lady), I got another remark I didn't appreciate about my check and it's arrival.

Pipes and Cigars has great prices; I don't have a credit card though.

And Pipes and Cigars is too. This particular person that always needs to throw in a little comment on the phone I'm sure has dealt with either bounced checks or checks that never arrived, but I expect better if I'm a loyal customer.

She was right this time though: the check never arrived. The 75 cigars I wanted to buy from them, I bought them from Cigars International instead. CI takes paypal and they don't question my integrity.

T.O.,
I've been in Pipes & Cigars shop many times in the past. I used to stop in there on my way up to Syracuse. In general terms I had a very decent experience, except for the one time I asked to see a pipe and I think it "may have been" the woman you dealt with. It was like it was a major problem to open a case and show me a pipe. It was a VERY expensive pipe. I had already purchased eight tins of tobacco (despite the ridiculous NYS Tobacco Taxes!!!) and was interested in that pipe. It wasn't like I was some bum off the street "tire kickin'". I already spent $$$$$ in the shop. I do like the house blends and selection.

Well, long story short, a VERY nice young fella came over and tended to me. She went back to the front counter to BS with some stogie hounds. To be honest, I DIDN'T BUY THAT DAMN PIPE BECAUSE OF THE WAY I WAS TREATED! I haven't been back since.

I deal with: Mars / 4Noggins / Smoking Pipes / J&R / Famous / C.I.
I'd rather wait for the mail order than go into a B&M and get treated like ****! :x
Just my .02c

Russ where else can I find your stuff????

(EDITED 12/14/09): Well, I made my usual trip up to Syracuse this past weekend and stopped into the new location, which is just up the road from the old one. I have to say the new shop is really nice! They also put in a huge lounge that was still getting the finishing touches. The walk in humidor is extra large. The pipe & tobaccos selection is dizzying!!!! This time, I had a VERY NICE EXPERIENCE (no sign of thr woman from my last trip), I was tended to by a very helpful young man (I didn't catch his name, he had glasses and very "New England" accent) who let me sample Russ' VaPers right then and there. I retired to the lounge with my Nording and enjoyed a nice relaxing smoke giving the "A.J.'s VaPer a whirl. Needless to say I bought two big bags of A.J.'s and VaPer Flake. I was very pleased to say the least. I will be back again.

I have dealt with several of the companies mentioned on this thread, and have had a decent experience with them all.

I mainly do business with pipesandcigars.com because I primarily smoke my own mixture that contains about 60% of one of their house blends. I place my order online through their website, pay with a card, and have never had any problems. Fast service, good price, and always a freebie or a sample in the shipment.
