Used to be a total cigar guy. Started on the voyage in a serious fashion around '94/95 during the boom years, but hasten to add that I was no stranger to cigars. Smoked my first ones in the early 70's (machine made) and after several vacations to England in the late 70's started appreciating the forbidden fruit.

Fast forward..........

A short time ago I had 4 freezeradors, various sizes from 5 cu ft up to 18 cu ft. Plus 4 large coolers. All totally chock full. No idea how many cigars. Suffice to say quite a lot....

Been collecting/smoking since '95 or so. Was smoking 3/day weekdays and 4/day on weekends most weeks on average.

Funny thing happened a few yrs ago, I started losing my taste for cigars. Didn't taste all that good to me anymore. Not like being in a temporary funk either. Been through several of those periods and this was different somehow.

Finally fessed up to it and started selling off what I had. Mostly through private sales to herfers I know through another board. Lots of local guys too.

Finished off last week with eliminating a bunch of aged stock to some of my local herfing buds. They got some fine sticks and I emptied out my last 2 freezeradors. One of them got the large freezerador as well (freebie).

Now have a grand total of 15-16 cigars that I placed in my desktop humi, which had never been used before. So I'm not totally cigar-less.

My health is fine, and I am not under doctors orders to quit. Just finally got to the point of saying "no mass". I've obsessed over cigars for 17 years, and now it's time to move on.

I'll still have an occasional cigar on special occasions, or when the mood strikes. Which isn't often these days.

No slam on cigars. Lots of members here still enjoy them on a regular basis. Me, not so much.

What a long strange trip it's been, as the lyric goes.

And there ya go......

I found pipes about a month before I joined BoB
after smoking cigars since the late 70s. I'm about
98% pipes, but I still smoke a cigar or two a week.
 
I'll bet half the brothers here have gone down that same path, myself included. Although I've smoked pipes for over 40 years, their was a number of years where they took a back seat to puros. But like you, the occasional stick is a delight, but I smoke perhaps one every few months.

I went totaly to cigars back in the late 80's but by the late 90's prices had gotten ridiculus so I went back to my pipes. I still buy one or two a month, but sadly I have to pay almost 5 times what I paid back in the 80's so I'll not really go back. Pipe tobacco has not had that kind of inflation in all these years no matter what some folks think! :p
 
I used to smoke a lot of cigars. I still love them, but there's a level of competency as well as certain intricacies that make piping so much more exciting and fulfilling than just lighting up a simple cigar.

I am now 95% pipes. I still keep a 40 stick humidor on my old Hammond organ. It's full on decent smokes.
 
Having never smoked a good cigar I can honestly say I don't see the appeal to be honest, perhaps this si due to smoking OTC cigars on the very odd occasion, I did smoke a £8 cigar once that my wife got me when our 1st daughter was born, it was okay but nothing to write home about.

Well, you probably have a goodly sum of funds to stock up on pipe baccy now, go get it Bud, before the taxman cripples the baccy buying markets!
 
The same for me. I have one sealed container that has about 100 or so cigars and hasn't been opened in four or five years. One large humidor with those "special" cigars that was last opened last spring, just to refill the humidifier. I'll never smoke these.

I'd smoked cigars for a few years before I'd smoked pipes, but I don't think I'd have called myself a "cigar smoker" before I was a "pipe smoker" if that makes any sense. Didn't smoke regularly and didn't really keep a humidor until after I'd bought my first pipe. I enjoy the occasional cigar, and smoke them with some regularity in the summer (just a lot more convenient to smoke in and around the pool than a pipe), but I think I'm in the minority that didn't transition from being a cigar guy to a pipe guy.
 
Cigars have been an on-and-off thing for a while, for me. Even before the pipe. I have to have the urge for a cigar. Usually it's a long day, when I don't want to do anything (in pipeland, it means dirty pipes, no will to clean them and not fussing with the tobacco), and especially if socializing and smoking are to be combined with the above (the pipe I have trouble getting a good smoke while being around people...getting better...but...)

When I smoked cigarettes, and I had a pipe, I figured like most, that a pipe was just "...another way to smoke a cigarette." I had no idea. Well, in that light, I also discovered a cigar is not just a big cigarette, either. They all have their own thing going on. For me, I see cigarettes as an impersonal, impatient, nervous dose of quick satisfaction; a cigar a bold, boisterous, socially-engaging tool of bonding; and the pipe a complex, contemplative, peaceful extension of ones being.

Some things are just better when they aren't a part of the regular routine. Satisfaction is a funny broad to woo.

I enjoy a cigar here and there but no more than a handful of times per year. I love them while I'm smoking them but I usually regret it later. I'll keep waking up all night with this nasty aftertaste and still be burping cigar in the morning. Probably because I almost always smoke them in the evening. I don't have that with a pipe. It is pleasurable and just enough tobacco for me.

Maybe this is because I'm not an everyday smoker like most of you guys. I'm more of a couple times a week to relax kind of guy.
 
Well men, I'm not about to cross over, however, I am back tracking some. Smoking a bowl of Engine 99 and contemplating my evening cigar. More frequently now than in years past, a thick stick between my teeth really feels great. I actually believe that the available time a man has to kick back and take personal time affects his smoke taste buds. Work a day world past, kids grown and out on their own, fewer chores and more leisure time are the Rx for quality smokes. Love a pipe but cigars definitely are quality smokes.
 
I have three humidors full of cigars right now. I've been smoking a pipe for about four months now and haven't had a cigar since I started the pipe. I find that the flavor of pipe tobacco is more pleasurable to me. And since I've been making my own pipes that's just another plus. I never got the urge to roll my own cigars. Now I have both the pleasure of smoking a pipe AND a nice hobby to boot. Can't complain about that!!
 
I have two desktop humidors full of real quality cigars (to me). Every now and then when the mood strikes me, I pull out a stogie and light 'er up. However, the pipe is my primary vehicle for consumption. Nothin' better than having a pipe hanging from my teeth with a good VA Flake or a tasty Latakia blend smoldering inside.
 
Crikey, some of you guys have been really into your cigars, this is fascinating to me as the few cigars I have tried have been absolutely rancid in truth, the one not so cheap (to me) cigar I had was okay but nothing to write home about. Is there seriously that much difference between lower-end cigars as compared to the more expensive ones, I don't mean to come across as ignorant (which I am in as much as I know very little about the subject) but what's all the fuss about with cigars!?!

A good cigar is like a good woman. Some you like, some you don't and some grow on a guy. If you like the look and the aroma, the right cigar will find you and then you too will appreciate the experience. A cigar like a pipe is a manly smoke. The right cigar will make you feel just great!

Ah, like most strong flavors a taste is developed over time. Originally, I hated the leftover leather taste I had in my mouth the next day...now, I enjoy it...it reminds me of the good time I had and I really enjoy the flavor as well...until the coffee washes it away.

I find cigars to be, overall (generalization here, folks) more one-dimensional than most pipe tobaks. Each stick kinda has it's own profile, like each pipe blend does. What it's made of and it's shape help dictate the final flavor you experience...even within the same blend, cigar size varies the experience.

I smoked cigars occasionally and was gifted a 100 stick humidor before I took pipes up in earnest. While I smoke more pipes, on the average, I still sneak stogies in on a fairly regular basis. Though, much more so in the warmer months....the straw hat syndrome :p

And, of course, I'm speaking of quality cigars....
