When I lived in New Orleans Ellis Marsallis would occasionally play at a place on Magazine Street called Tyler's Beer Garden. Got a bunch of CDs, too. 8)

All nice stuff. Not really a Metheny fan, myself, though I've seen him live. Some of the fusion gets too far out there, though I've got Chick in the house.

Lately, Marcus Miller's been ringing my bell. Crosses over a bit into soul (at least what I call soul), but that suits me just fine.

I've had the luck/pleasure of seeing live:

Chick
Maynard
Chuck Mangione
Pat
Stanley Jordan
Count Bassie
Marcus
Phil Woods

I'm sure there's more than a few that are escaping me at the moment. Truly, though, I'm a bop guy.

I fell in love with jazz in the mid 50s after watching my first episode of "Peter Gunn". I bought my first jazz album after watching Lee Marvin's cop show called "M Squad".

Then in 59, I was given a copy of Dave Brubeck's Take Five Album for my birthday. That was when my interest in jazz became a serious endeavor. I still have all the vinyl records I've ever purchased.

I remember, as a junior in high school, me and a buddy going to our first jazz concert at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium to see The Dave Brubeck Quartet. During intermission we were in the lobby proudly smoking our pipes when someone called out "Mr. V". It was my high school biology teacher. He proceeded to light his pipe and we had a nice little chat about the concert and pipes. He was one of the coolest teachers at my school. He drove a Jaguar XKE Coupe with a reel to reel tape player mounted behind the seats.

So-Cal had a lot great jazz clubs. My buddys and I love to hang out at The Lighthouse, Shelly's Manne-Hole, and Donte's. One of the best times we ever had, was when "Hef" started The Playboy Jazz Festival at The Hollywood Bowl. I attended the first seven concerts. Nothing but non stop jazz from 12 pm to 12 am. As soon as one group would finish, the stage would revolve and there was another group ready to swing. They used to let you bring in ice chests filled with adult beverages and culinary delights. We would always sit in cheap seats with all the partiers. The smell of "Beep Bop Cigarettes" filled the air. We never had any problems and nobody got out of line. We were all there sharing our love of jazz. How sweet it was.

Buddy Rich doing he's thing!
