The red Virginias have a little less tangy sweetness than usual, and are a little more earthy than commonly expected, though the hay notes somewhat mitigate that. The perique is mostly plum and raisiny rather than spicy, the latter partially undercut by the dark fired Kentucky, which has a bare hint of spice, but is a little nutty, toasty, and woodsy. I can't identify the topping, but it has a slight sweetness with a sour note and a taste of alcohol. The components meld well to create a harmonious, consistent flavor, though I do feel this blend will benefit from some aging. Not very complex, but it burns well, slow, smooth and cool with no moisture. It has just enough nicotine to be interesting. Could be an entry level product for those wanting to venture into this territory. I consider this to be just shy of an all day smoke, but is easily repeatable during the day.

Thanks Jim for the review.

I've read the other reviews on the review site, but have come to embrace your views as a yardstick since you seem to taste the definitive points. And they are ones I generally agree with so I like to use your reviews for anything new.

I'll check Sixpence out in due course. And like all the GLP blends I've tried I also find they benefit from some down time. Some more than others.

Cheers,

RR

Another fine review Jim, Thanks for all the particulars.
After pointing out some fine blends for me in Richmond, I appreciate your views and knowledge of tasty leaf.

I thank you for the very kind compliment, Andy. It was a great pleasure to finally meet you. We ought to chat some time soon after the turkey is eaten!

Brewdude: Thank you. And yes, I think this blend does need to age.

Greg keeps swearing I'd love Six Pence, but I'm no fan of Perique. Especially Greg's, he loves the stuff and gets particularly pungent Cajun leaf.

Eventually I'm gonna have to man-up and try it. Good notes on the mix, Jim. Thanks.

You'll be a Perique fan eventually Kyle. Just a matter of time.

;)

I could not appreciate perique, thought it bit my tongue. Now I smoke VaPers 95% of the time. Whenever a tobacco is not up to standard according to my tastebuds, I just add a bit of the big P and.....there you go!
