The name of this mixture may imply to some that it's heavy in perique, but actually, it's a moderate amount. You will taste it all through the smoke, but it doesn't dominate, and the spice is intertwined with familial notes from the dark fired Kentucky and Turkish components. There is a pleasant, gentle sweetness from the honey flavored cavendish, contrasted with a very mild nuttiness, and sweet note from the burley. The Virginias are slightly sweet, but mainly provides some earthy body to the proceedings. It has a rich flavor that bears repeating during your smoking day. Burns perfectly smooth with no dottle, no bite, and a consistent taste - the hallmark of a well designed blend.

Nice review, Jim.

I'll add that this is one I liked much better tinned than in bulk. The first run of it (which came in the autographed and numbered tins) really knocked my socks off. I liked it enough that I got a pound in bulk and jarred it up. After about four years, it really hasn't improved that much, unfortunately. I think time in in a tightly packed tin is what brings out the best of this one.

Great review Jim, this is one of my go to tobacco's. I really enjoy the natural tobacco flavor, and as you stated, the consistency throughout the smoke!

I'm curious about this blend, "Reviews" states it has Orientals in it (what ever that is)
and from my experience with "Presbyterian" I'm not a lover of them.
How does this compare, anyone know?

For all the components that go into it, it's not as complex as you'd expect. It is nothing like Presbyterian and whatever Orientals are in there are just along for the ride. If you're a VaPer fan, it's worth a try.

Okay, it's on you "E", if I end up hating it I'm taking the tin and aiming for your forehead. ;)

I agree with E. If you hate it, kill him since he answered first. But make sure we get the key to his tobacco cellar first!!!  :joker: :fpalm: Leave the laundry, and don't forget the pipe cleaners!  :pirat: :D

Seriously, the components meld well together, and I find it rather easy to smoke.

Ya got a deal sir!
We'll give it a try but, I have a long list so we'll seen how soon I can get to it.
That should give "E" plenty of time to get out of the country. ;)

Naw, I have a feeling you'll probably like it. Actually I already am out of the country, so I feel fairly safe in my recommendations-- and from any flying tins!!!  :affraid:

This tobacco was my introduction to Perique and one I keep returning to. It doesn't make my mouth 'sing and dance' like say MF does but it is quality tobacco and far from boring. For anyone who associates Macbaren with sauce, bite, and goop, the HH series is IMO several cuts above their normal offerings.

I smoked some of this years ago, when it was first released and I liked it well enough. As Jim states, it is artfully blended.

I'm thinking the "Perique" is a misnomer, though. Probably Green River Burley processed in the Perique fashion.

This has no Latakia in it, if that's what you're thinking of. It's pretty much a VaPer, and a rather mild one at that.

If you'd like to try some lmk.

Renewed my acquaintance with this blend today as a result of this thread. It had been a good while since I burned a bowl, perhaps a year or more (probably more). So I figured it was time.

I had a jar that was from a tin I opened back in June '12. Think this might be from the OR but not completely sure.

I chose my "new" GBD Rockroot 9437 Pot Billiard Estate Pipe recently acquired from bro Mattia for its inaugural voyage. This turned out to be a match made in heaven!

The 'baccy was slightly on the dry side, which is how it came (and how I like it). It loaded easily, and I saw that the large size of the bowl would support a long smoke. I was right!

It took the match easily, and after the char light I was on my way.

I was initially impressed on how much body there was to this blend. Somehow I remembered it as being on the lighter end of the scale, yet this was most definitely med+.

The Perique presence made itself known right away. And it didn't quit all the way down the bowl. Black pepper and slightly sour notes as well as ripe plum were present on each and every puff. Whether this was due entirely to the Perique or the other elements of the blend is debatable. yet that's my take FWIW!

After at least a 1/2 hr with this wonderful experience, I had to put the pipe down to attend to other domestic issues. And so I came back to a DGT in a few hrs to find the same characteristics in the relight. All in all, a wonderful bowl and one worth repeating.

So if that passes for a proper review, then there it is. I don't normally wax poetic about a blend, but this one ran all the bases for me. Looks like I need to get some more of this in!

Had my first bowl of this yesterday morning from a sample I obtained through a Brother. I don't know whether it is from tinned or bulk and what the age is. I decided to smoke it in an Estate straight apple I refurbished. The first bowl of tobacco I've put through that pipe since I refurbished it several months ago. I can't describe too much after one bowl but my first experience with it was superb. It was my first smoke of the day so maybe it seemed a bit more stout than it is but I felt it was in the Medium ballpark and had such good burning qualities and lacked any traditional MacBaren unpleasantness that I could see making this an all day smoke on the random day trip with the wife. Think I'll have another bowl to confirm.
