The text describes how the Ikebana freehand pipes ("Furihandopaipu") came to the export market in 1978. The same Danish-influenced freehands were Japan-only under the Tsuge "Jinmu" marque since 1965.

So if you find a Jinmu (if your browser shows characters this looks like: 神武) you may have something special on your hands.

I can't read Japanese; I just pumped it through the translator and parsed out the choppy text it gave back.

Thanks for the translation, pretty cool ****.

This is the Google translation:
We have started making Furihandopaipu, the mid-1965's. At that time, following a unique form and amazed the world, we produce the Danisshupaipu, its reputation was well received in Japan.

We also, for the realization of their products, had visited the home of the craftsmen Furihandopaipu Denmark, Larsen and brainstorming in the original Ten Ivaruson and Yogen Six 重Nemashita trial and error.
And finally, I was able to make the work satisfying. These pipes "Jinmu" given a name that was only sold in Japan.

1977, came the opportunity to develop these pipes. President and Mrs. Ivan lease SMOKING store in Chicago, traveled to Japan in the Queen Elizabeth has visited the Factory Tsuge. At that time, she showed the pipe, is made highly praised, it was purchased on the spot. This is what got me introduce our Furihandopaipu overseas.

This pipe, the new name given to the present year is 1978. Manufacturing was the European distributor Tsuge, was when he visited Japan Fufunageru Laufer's managing director in Germany. He had a deep understanding of Japanese culture such as tea ceremony and flower arrangement. At night, he reached the banquet during the negotiations surrounding the Furihandopaipu of our pipes, the largest of the Japanese culture to the world "Ikebana" and is now at the mention of the name if it. And in our Furihandopaipu, "IKEBANA" is the inscription seems to happen. The first one this year # 001 made in 1978 was exported to West Germany. Then today, "Ikebana" is the chosen people of the world is your favorite.
This is the Yahoo translation:
The fact that this corporation starts making the free hand pipe is time during 1965 age. At that time, [danitsushiyupaipu] which produces the original forum one after another has surprised the world, the reputation had reached even in Japan. Also this corporation, directed to the actualization of the respective company product, the craftsman went to Denmark which is the mecca of the free hand pipe, studied in the origin of [shitsukusuten] [ivuaruson] and [yogen] [rasen], repeated trial and error. And it is to reach the point where it can make the work which at last, can be agreed upon. Those pipes could give the name, “God military affairs”, in just the country was sold. 1977, the opportunity of development visited into these pipes. President and spouse of the Chicago smoking tool store Ivan lease, visited Japan with the queen Elizabeth number, stopped in the 柘 factory. That time, when the pipe was shown, high it was appraised the completion, was purchased at that place. This, is to have become the opportunity which sells the free hand pipe of this corporation in the foreign country. Those where it can give the new name where in this pipe, it reaches to the present are 1978. When it was the European agency of the 柘 factory, special duty [huhunageru] of the German [rauhua] corporation visits Japan, was. He had understanding which is deep in the Japanese culture such as tea ceremony and flower arrangement. The night, in the coffee hour which receives him, surrounding the free hand pipe of this corporation, while talking business, directing this pipe, to the world, to the name, culture “[ikebana]” which Japan you are proud that it became the story which you say how. And it is to reach the point where the hallmark “of IKEBANA” enters into the free hand pipe of this corporation. The first 1, it exported the #001 1978 make to West Germany. Then as for “[ikebana]”, regular use of the people of the world it was to today
I think that Google did a better job, but they are both a little difficult to understand

"Iwan Reis" retranslated into "Ivan lease," which I admit gave me a guilty chuckle.

I've never been overly impressed with Tsuge's. They're obnoxiously expensive (except for the Tokyo line) and the grain isn't even passable until you reach the "F" grades. They also seem to have very poor resale value. For the same cash you can buy about a dozen other superior brands IMO....

Some questions for DPG:
1. Do you comments refer only to Tsuge pipes or Japanese pipes in general?
2. I agree that they are obnoxiously expensive, but their shapes are very interesting.

3. I have not seen many on the estate market. The ones that I have seen seem to go for a nice price. Do their owners just keep them or maybe there aren't that many owners.

Hey Bub,

I rather like the pipes made by Yuki Tokutomi as well as T.Arita and Smio Satou. These are all artisan made Japanese pipes. Tsuge's are factory made but just not of the quality of other factory produced pipes like Castello for example.

Last year a fella was selling a Tsuge "F" grade billiard with fairly nice grain. It had been smoked a few times at best and was as close to new as you could expect from an estate pipe. This thing was $700+ when new. The fella had a buy it now price of $200- and it went unsold through several relistings.

Hi I'm new but I couldn't resist chiming in on this one...proper intro forthcoming.

Furihandopaipu/danishopaipu is engrish for Freehand Pipe/Danish pipe. Gotta love google/yahoo trans!
Confusing as all get out but the gist is they start out as copies of a foreign product then take on a life of their own with Japanese design cues and the costs associated therewith.

Wow these translations are really funny man!!!!!

In all seriousness I have a Tsuge Arashi Dubliny freehandy thingymabob with a stem on it. It is really cool and a damn good smoker too!

I'm with Piet! I just smoked a brand new Tsuge Arashi sitter that came in the mail from Japan yesterday, and it performed excellently! I took it kind of easy, being that I chose to smoke an untried aromatic (Davidoff Blue mixture) in a new pipe, but the results were very good. It's a rather diminutive pipe with a cool plateux rim and an eye catching ruby finish. I wasn't so thrilled with the Davidoff however. I think I'll stick with their non-aromatics. :pirat:

Mine kicks ass on burley blends,
Here is a pic of my Tsuge,

Hey Piet, that's funny because I bid on a Tsuge just like yours, but lost. The same guy in Japan was selling them, as well as some super high grade stuff (an Ivarsson, Tokutomi). The one like yours was the more popular of the two!
