Anyone here prefer matches over lighters? Tonight I was watching a "how its made" program and they profiled Swedish Match, who makes matches. I was looking to buy a few of their boxes and can't find anyone who sells them. That got me to thinking and researching. I have discovered that there are some very fancy match boxes that have quite a history. Any match experts in the house? Where is the best place to find a good variety of matches that work with pipes? Thanks.

Ah, the age old debate.  I'm a match guy for sure.  It took me a while to learn how to light a pipe with a match, particularly outdoors.  I tried on my patio, when I first took up the pipe, then gave up as I couldn't keep the match lit.  The first winter, smoking in my workshop, I went back to the match and figured it out.  My matches moved out to the patio when the weather warmed. Later in the Spring/Summer, it dawned on me that I no longer had difficulty lighting a match and pipe, even on breezy days.  Practice makes perfect I guess.

I keep my box of matches in a small Rubbermaid container on the patio, they get damp fast.

I find with the match, I can control the flame and the tobacco isn't scorched like it can be with a lighter.  I use a lighter (butane insert in a Zippo case) for traveling.  I think the match does less damage to my bowl tops as well versus the lighter.

I've always used these Diamond, "strike on box" matches that I buy at our local Food Lion (3-pack/$6 or so).

Family Dollar stores carry Family Chef wooden matches that are as good as any. I've used Swan Vestas and the like, but don't see any advantage.

Been using matches since I wrote this post. I must say that I quite enjoy this. I began smoking a pipe to begin with to slow my life down and this does so even further. I also feel like I have more flame control. All I have at the moment are these cheap-o stick matches that seem to break easily and don't light easily. Time to visit WalMart. :) :cyclops:

MATCHES. MATCHES, MATCHES. Lighters are for when you go out in a suit !!    Grocery stores are the best places to get them at the cheapest prices. All those other Swan Vesta's etc. are meant to increase profit margins for retailers

Cool, Just don't forget to tidy up your ashtray occasionally!

I use the Greenlight penny matches myself. 32 count box. More reliable than any lighter.

Cheers,

Same here Brewdude. The small boxes make them nice and portable too.

+3 - Diamond matches first, Bic second

Matches --because once you let the head burn off, there are no chemicals left and it's just pure wood. It's also the coolest flame you're going to get. I also use the beeswax impregnated hemp string for its purity and low temperature.
A zippo burns about 100F hotter, and if you use the Premium fuel in the black can, and let it burn for 2 seconds after lighting, there's very little odor and no taste that I've been able to detect. These three are my top choices.

Go 1000F up the scale and you'll find butane, burning at 1977F--whether a Bic, Old Boy, or whatever. Have to be careful here, because there's a risk of scorching the rim, possibly the bowl, and of overheating the tobacco, destroying volatile flavor compounds. That's why I go for the lower temperature options.

Well, if there is one thing that I've learned so far about matches and thats that they're not all created equally. I have yet to run to the store since posting this to pick up some greens but I have a few boxes laying around from various places I've visited. The long matches from Smokey Joes in Fife WA are excellent. The Brick House matches that I acquired at Ford & Haig in Scottsdale AZ really suck - they're very hard to light.

BTW, I also love lighters. It seems that a lot of people dont like to spend money on them but I enjoy them as much as a good quality pipe. I was married in May of 2013 and my wife gave me a beautiful silver Dunhill on our Wedding night.

Really good point. My wife doesn't mind me smoking a pipe, even in the house but she can't tolerate messy ash trays. The little spent matches adds a bit of clutter.

Great info here. Thanks for posting this.

Matches for me as well. The only time I will use a lighter (usually just a cheapo) is when I'm bird hunting with a corn cob pipe because matches are unwieldy to light while holding a shotgun  :D

I must say that I actually prefer my Xikar over matches, though I utilize both often.

I am equally surprised that many of you matchlovers use common grocery store matches coated in chemicals. Most matchlovers I know are 100% wood matches with as little chemical as possible. I think I saw one poster above say that after the head is burned out there are no chemicals? From my experience, that is simply not true. I say this as I watch the chemicals burn on a couple of Diamond-brand matches.

I'm no match expert by any means, but I was intrigued nonetheless.

I like lighters for use on the go. I've been smoking more on my commute, and it's easier to use while driving than opening a match box, removing a match, holding the box with my hand on the wheel, and striking it. It is doable, but I think lighters let me pay more attention.

The downside to lighters is that they run out of fuel, often at the worst times. The ones I have don't have fuel gauges either, so I usually have an extra match-box or bring an extra lighter.

I use two soft-flame butane lighters right now.

I redid the leather so it looks better (see one of my videos in signature). It's worked for years, and I only paid $5 for it.

Unfortunately, it crapped out from plastic internals after about a year. I bought a new one and transferred the case so as to keep the gift, but I'd not recommend buying one. The quality is a shame since the little button on the bottom left slide out a tube so you can direct the flame into the bottom of even a deep bowl. I love that functionality, but like I said, the quality is awful.

The non sulfur ones are nice. I had a case (400 10 count boxes) from a restaurant called chancellors on Nantucket island. The company I worked for at the time was demolishing the place. The case was unopened in the back room, so they became mine. I don't know about the food there ( they went out of business I believe), but the matches were top shelf lol.
