Murray era tin of dunhill?

I just got new pipe from Kurt Huhn in Rhode Island. He sent this tin along with. I looked around online, and I think this is a murrays tin, but I'm not sure. Anybody here know about this?

I'd say not as it has the script Dunhill, not the all lowercase art deco dunhill as the Murray's did. Also I compared my recently bought tin of London Mixture ( 2 mo's ago) and they are identical! What made you think it was a Murray's era tin? :twisted:

Looks like a Murray's-era tin to me. It has the painted tin lid (as opposed to a sticker on the lid) and lists the place of manufacture as the UK.

I saw on some forum a guy said the tins were painted as opposed to stickers when they are made by murrays. (May have been puff.com) also, it has a paper band around the side like the old Erinmore flake did that I used to get that was Murrays made. I saw some empty tin collections on eBay as well that listed them as being older tins that were painted and had bands on them. All the dunhill stuff I get now has a label sticker. I figured it may be. If so, the guy gave me something great for a throw on when I got the pipe.

The script Dunhill is the give-away. ALL Murray's tins were done while the Dunhill brand was under direct ownership of the Dunhill company. My latest Orlok/STG London Mixture tin has a PAINTED top part of the tin but the NEW script Dunhill. The Loring pages has a good discourse on the Dunhill tins from the start of the firm. The script version of Dunhill was done by the Richmont luxury goods co. which bought Dunhill several years ago to divorce itself from the tobacco products. The old art deco lower case dunhill is what they have kept for the men's furnishings which now are the ONLY thing dunhill sells. I have some empty tins of London Mixture from the mid '90s which were wt the end of the Murray's production and they ALL have the art deco lower case dunhill As far as paper labeled tins, the first ones I got like that were in the eraly part of this century. I have some early STG/Orlick production PAINTED lid tins from the late '90s with the Script Dunhill especially my 965 and Royal Yacht which still had the painted blue background but these were after Murray had stopped making them. When I get home to my 'puter I'll put a link to thr Loring Pages that discusses all this. Remenber, Murray only started blending Dunhills blends from '81 till around '94/5 .

Orlik tins have a "bubble" circle under the tin close to the outer edge. Murray tins are flat under.

Here's 4 Murray era tins and one dunhill era ( lower left 965) Notice the upper/lower case art deco dunhill :twisted:



Seems the Loring Pages have gone away agian!! He had a good discourse on ALL the dunhill tins fro 1912 up to 1999. With pics as well !!

And here's a Murray tin from the early '80s . Notice The "Manufactured and Blended in The United Kingdom" at the top and the Duke street address on the bottom. ALL my McConell and Murrat blended tins that I have around have this on the as well as the lower case dunhill.

I believe Carlos is correct about the 2004 date. It was certainly later than the mid-90s. In any case, I have an empty tin of 965 that I know to have been a Murray's-era product because of when I bought and smoked it, and it has the script Dunhill logo.

I have a couple of (what I suspect to be) late 1980s/early 1990s EMP tins that I haven't popped and smoked yet. I was under the impression they were Murray's products, too.

First off, I had stopped smoking pipes around '95 and only smoked cigars till around '04 when I got back to my pipes and at that time word was out that Murray's was going to close. So based on that I presumed that they stopped producing dunhill tobacco. When I came back to pipes I was told that Orlik/STG had started making the blends that Murray's had made. In this time frame Richemont had bought dunhill and made the brand nomenclature changes. So it probably is correct that there probably were Murray produced tins with the "new" type style brand . As far as figuring out if it is late Murray's production, without verifiable provenance as to it's origin of purchase, and date of said purchase, it's realy anyones guess  :twisted: :twisted:

London Mixture figured heavily into my rotation back around '01 or so, before I took my pipe hiatus. Even took a tin with me on my '01 UK holiday which was focused on the Islay Whisky Fest. Talk about bringing coals to Newcastle!

Back then, I was blissfully unaware of the mfg issues. Just knew that it satisfied my tastes at the time. Smoked through the tin in the pubs, as that was while one could still smoke in public places!

History notwithstanding, I got in a tin of the Orlik release but have yet to crack it. And also have a tin of the Murray's era tin which will be opened at some point.

Alas, I pretty much avoid Lat blends these days. Perhaps that will change at some point as all things that go around come around..........

I can always count on you for a good answer buddy. Im just gonna smoke it. I'll get more if I like it, if the more is different somehow, I hope I can't tell. Ignorance IS bliss sometimes.

Case in point- I used to clean out houses for Bank of America with my brothers. One house had a old liquor cabinet with bottles dating back to the sixties. I took the whiskys for myself. I drank them, and because of this I thought that I liked Canadian club. So I bought another bottle. It was awful by comparison.

You'll always be able to put a little age on any tobacco you may purchase but, at my age and family history to put ten or more years on anything, I won't live long enough to smoke it. :fpalm:

Murray closed in 2005 and and there was a short overlap in the painted tins but I'd call it Murray. :shock:
