This was from a deer rack I found in the woods years ago and just now remembered I had hanging in the barn. I cut this off the rack. Now all I need to do is drill through the center and add a pick then I think it will be complete.
Hello, very nice little tamper. If you ever need any brass or whatnot to add to the bottom of the tampers, let me know, I can give you plenty, and cut it to size and what not.
I need to find one of my homemade tampers and take a pic of them, but I made a few out of obsidian rocks from the dessert out here, work well and look awesome after buffing and smoothing them.
Also an idea for the pick, you could take a long and slightly thin nail, and use a grinder to make the slight scoop at the end for minor scraping and removal of tobacco, if you get a nail with a wide enough head, you could use that as the base so you don't put to much heat to the bottom of the antler.
That should work nicely! Send some photos when you complete it.
Does anyone remember Papa Duke? He made deer and elk antler tampers, I have one of his highly polished Northern Star models from deer antler. I cannot find hide nor hair of him after 2008. He did not apply the cap to the bottom and simply left it smooth, which is also very nice.
