I really enjoyed an ounce or so of Kendal flake that I had. I've since picked up some Lakeland Brickle and 1792 which I've yet to sample, and am considering some Ennerdale at the moment.

Re: pedantry, I get what you're saying, but find the term much more useful as a more specific style descriptor. I feel the same about "English" blends. I'm not going to start calling FVF an English any time soon.

Gona have to agree with ya on this one.
Just curious, but, personal tastes aside, why would various fruits (plum, cherry, apple, etc) and vanilla, anise/related flavors, and even cinnamon, be ok for pipe tobacco, but other botanicals not?

I don't smoke aro's although I've tried them and there's plenty of jeers about them but, to put things straight we're just teasing, all in fun and NO harm ment.
The fact that I think Lakelands are the nastiest thing you can smoke is just my opinion and that's never meant much.
I never liked Scotch either but, that doesn't make me I a troglodyte. There's been a beer debate since I was a young man over Buttweiser or Coors, you can tell what camp I'm in.
It was always in fun and I hope everyone takes it that way.  ;)

That's what I figured, but there does also seem to be some who are surprised by the idea of 'other botanicals' in tobacco.

btw re: beer; my answer would be Schlitz!

I won't even go there sir, Enjoy!  ;)

I have been cellaring pounds of Lakeland tobaccos for years and IMO they are the finest quality tobaccos I have ever smoked. The only other Virginias that compare are McClelland. I know that it's all personal preference when it comes to flavoring, but being the tobacco **** that I am I pretty much enjoy it all. Be it G&H Rum Flake or Glengarry and the floral/soapy Ennerdale, I enjoy them.

On another note, Ron. I see your pupils have dilated in your avatar photo!!!!!  :lol!:

Must be an overdose of Escudo!!!!

Oh wow man, I thought these shades would hide it.
Okay.....I admit it,.......I'm strung out on Escudo. I'll do cold turkey, just don't make me smoke any Lakelands please.

I'm enjoying some Ennerdale right now. What I find remarkable about these GH scented offerings is how perfectly married the floral/herbal flavors are with the flavors of the underlying tobaccos (which, of course, are uniformly of the highest quality). Generations of blending experience are on display here.

I'd have to say my favorite is the one that introduced me to the essence of Lakeland blends:

G&H Louisiana Perique

The only blend I can smoke that has Perique

I haven't tried many Lakeland blends, but Louisiana Flake and Dark Birds Eye are my favorites so far. If FVF and St. James Flake are also considered Lakeland blends, then add those two to the list. I guess I must try Grasmere and Ennerdale soon...

Dark Bird's Eye is a staple for me. You should also try Kendal Kentucky, which is along the same lines but is 100% Kentucky leaf (from Africa). I would call FVF and SJF Lakeland tobaccos based on geography, but they don't have the floral/herbal scents usually associated with the Laleland "style."

It's always been my belief (based on my own supposition) that many more people, especially Americans, are accepting of those things that relate to foods above and before those that don't. In a way it makes sense to enjoy the taste of things you would eat. Yet odd to taste a Geranium which you would never eat. I love lakelands but I understand the aversion. Like they say, "More for us!"

I suppose. Of course, there are plenty of violet and rose flavored candy/desserts out there (I understand geranium flavor/scent is basically the same as rose). For those who want to try violet, you can get some violet Choward's from 4 Noggins, and rose flavored desserts at most Middle Eastern groceries. A few stores in New Orleans sold candied rose and violet petals for cake decorations as well (very tasty); I would think they are still available

Don't be afraid to expand you palates, brothers, no matter if it's food, wines, liquers, or even pipe tobaccos :drunken:

I have an "aro" from Steve Books called "Four Roses".

As I understand it, it's only flavored with 4 types of rose petals.

Have yet to try it, but it should be interesting.

Why not?

To this day I still have to thank Dr.T for sending me a sample of Grasmere Flake. At the time, it was practically unobtanium. I love it. As far as English scented flakes go, it's perfection. I am slowly beginning to appreciate Ennerdale a bit more. It's taken a bit of time for the topping on the bit that I have to mellow out, but I am finally beginning to enjoy it, and of all the scented tobaccos I have smoked, it's probably the most amped up.

I love Ennerdale because the herbal/floral flavors, though heavy, are so perfectly integrated with the flavors of the really excellent tobaccos. Every time I crack open one of my jars, I find myself thinking it could easily be an all-day, every day smoke for me.

I just made a big IPSD order last night, so I'll be learning what my favorite is soon. I got a bunch of GH&Co tobaccos, the scented ones include: BB no. 2, Ennerdale, Kendal Flake, Glengary flake, Brown flake scented, Scotch Flake, and Bosun Cut plug (labelled unscented, but the reviews say it is scented). I got some CR Flake and Brown Flake US, as well as a box of ODF to boot!

No. 7 Broken Flake is the one! I love Dark Flake Scented, Glengarry, Grasmere, Coniston, etc. Don't like that essence that smells like a cross between bubble gum and the inside of a bicycle tire...aka Ennerdale/1792. But No. 7 Broken is not so potent that each bowl gets you a free trip to the ER, and it is very easy to work with, very forgiving of rapid puffing...all in all a great experience. And of course there is the long held mythology that Gawith employees consider No.7 to be their finest flake. The makeup is 75% Flue-cured Virginia, 16 % dark fired & 9% Burley.
