Only my Pipe Brethren would appreciate this...

Yesterday was a very, very special day for me. I took my 19 year old son to De La Concha (in NYC) to pick out his first pipe and accompanying tobacco!!! - on my very own birthday no less, how perfect is that?!?

He has been home from college (in his second year) for spring break (he attends SUNY Fredonia in westernmost NY State, on the banks of Lake Erie) for the last week. I noticed that he has shown an increased interest in my pipes this week which was unusual considering that he is such an anti-tobacco proponent. However, this week he was asking some intriguing questions so of course I "invited" him to give pipe smoking a try. To my surprise he accepted and we planned a trip to De La Concha for him to pick out his own pipe and tobacco and accessories.

At the shop, faced with a myriad of choices, he was very decisive and picked out this beautiful Butz Choquin smooth Canadian (price was right and within our target range for beginners!) He picked out some De La Concha's Marbella and Pieces of Eight to get started. I felt it was important for him to pick out his own rather than use one of my pipes and tobacco, in that way the new pipe is truly his and he knows that he personally picked it out for himself. Same with the tobaccos. He took a whiff of every jar and decided upon two blends to start. George, our buddy in the store was a great help and showed much patience!

We shared a bowl together for the very first time last night after returning from my parents for my birthday celebration. I showed him the basics. What a privilege to share a bowl with your son. It was a privilege that I was not able to enjoy with my own Father, unfortunately.

A great and memorable moment in a Father's life... wanted to share it with you guys...

Happy Smokes today and always...,

Lou

That's exciting Lou.

I have three sons who are all cigarette smokers. The middle son surprised me at Christmas time when he announced that he had given up smoking the past year. I don't begrudge that at all. He shared that he does enjoy the occasion cigar once and a while so I was able to gift him a nice cigar.

My youngest son has shown little interest in the pipe. My eldest son, who now lives with us, has tried the pipe. He has a small assortment of pipes and an assortment of OTC blends. Of course, he has access to my cellar :) . He's always battling to give up cigarettes. I've encouraged him to switch to the pipe but he has little interest. But I think someday he may take a serious interest.

I have a picture of my three sons smoking cobs a few years ago... a one event occurence.

So I congratulate you on this new mutual bond of interest between you and your son. :D

Lou, That is absolutely fantastic! The proud history of pipe smoking Carbones seems to carry on to the next generation! We'll have to wait and see if you still approve when he's smoking your prized Beckers and Dunhills though

That's teriffic! It's good to see family traditions handed down.

And having his own first pipe is a great idea. He's joining a grand tradition, and that day deserves its own pipe.

Lou thats great, I had the same pleasure with my son at our local tobacconist Mallards in Syracuse NY a few years back,he picked out a nice Stanwell and 3 tins of Night Cap (at my recommendation). Its so nice to share the finer things in life with your children.

That is fabulous Lou! It is certainly a special thing to sit down with and share a bowl with your son!

Let me add my congratulations. Some of the most pleasurable times I've shared with my sons have been over a bowl of fine pipeweed. There is a great deal of satisfaction in sharing something you love with your sons.

I have been trying to convert my brother in law. I gifted him a selection of tobaccor and a couple of pipes for him to experiment. Congrats on the shared interest of you and your son.
