I have a Nording I bought new a long time back and it has such a tight fitting stem I sometimes hold off taking it out to clean because it's so tight. How or what would I use to make it a little less tight of a fit. I even think the stem is going to break at times.

Hey Skip, have you tried putting it in the fridge then removing the stem? Then a little bit of wax on the tenon before you reinsert? Or sand the tenon down just a wee bit? I'm sure there are better ways but that's what I've been doing.

I wonder is silicone would be ok to use??

Thanks I will try what your doing first I guess.

Hang on here, we use beeswax to tighten up a loose stem.
This one is too tight right??????????????????

Skip, Rub a Graphite pencil on the tenon, This will lube the tenon for a smoother fit. Graphite is a great lubricant!

Yep, what Piet said. I had a Dunny with a stem so tight I was afraid I would snap the tenon right off. I used my pocked knife to scrape up a file of pencil lead and put on multiple applications, it eventually impregnates the wood of the shank and lets the tenon slide in quite nicely.

Then I would rarely take it apart. Push a pipe cleaner while together, and then maybe every couple dozen smokes pull it apart, first maybe trying the refrigerator route. I'm OCD and a clean freak, but I realized long ago that it was unnecessary and overkill to be pulling my pipes apart after every smoke, ultimately probably doing more harm than good by doing so. Well made, well-fitted pipes don't allow for much build-up to happen between stem and briar. It's silly to be concerned with that wee bit of gunk in there.

My bad.......

2 days later............................ Skip some feed back PLS!!
Did it work out??

Another facet of it is that it's going to be at maximum tightness after you've just smoked it, from the shank absorbing incidental moisture.

That won't matter pulling it out (probably, once it's lubed well) but it WILL if you force it back in while it's still swollen. You can easily crack a shank that way. (I've done it  )

Let it cool and dry out well before re-inserting the stem.

Thanks guys will play with it and see what happens, but I for sure can't take it apart when smoking of just finished.

Agreed!!

Find a drillbit that will just fit inside and just give it a twist with the hand, take out a small amount. Worked with my tightfitting pipes with no ill effects. Your discretion, though.

Been gone to Lufkin to the skin Doc all day and didn't do much this weekend.

Only tried it one time and put a bit of sno-seal (bees wax) on it and seemed to help. It's not just tights after smoking it, it's tight all the time.
