Wow for a guy who just commissioned a pipe this is a pretty.... ballsy move.

Get it? Ballsy? It's a pun because there's a picture of.. ahh... never mind.
Don't act nuts, Sas. Be nice to your clients, or you might get the sack as their pipe-maker. Being crotchety won't help.

What, was I being too testy?

(I'm a little ashamed of how quickly I thought of those... I guess you could say my knowledge of that sort of joke is... vas.)

I always get rid of that carbon junk before smoking a pipe. The estate houses that think they're doing you a favor by including it in their refurbishing process are doing nothing of the sort (IMO).

I know that would be my first action after having such a foul bowl.

I smoked it today after sanding out the pre-carbonized bowl chamber and it was nice. Thanks for the advice Sasquatch.

I got a new Stanwell Featherweight Horn, supposedly made in 1998, last week and it too tasted pretty bad on first light. Running a pipe cleaner through it I found it had a ton of the carbonizer stuff glopping up the bottom of the bowl and even into the stem; I removed that and things improved immediately. Now on the third or fourth bowl full it's starting to smoke pretty sweet. I'm glad yours had a happy ending, too! Sometimes breaking in as well as breaking up is hard to do...

I purchased a new Stanwell featherweight pipe this week. The first half bowl of burley that I smoked in it was bitter from beginning to end. It was nearly unbearable. Is this normal? I've never had a new pipe do this. Will it subside after breaking it in?
Thanks,
Milan
I had a similar experience with a Davidoff. It tasted so bitter that I wanted to break the damn thing in two. Out of desperation, I coated this inside of the bowl and shank with full creme sherry. I did this about 20 minutes before I smoked the pipe. After repeating this 6 times, a nice cake has developed and today this is my favourite pipe for smoking English blends.

I've received my new Stanwell billiard #13 today. Cleaned out all the "soot", using full creme sherry. No bitter taste, only the "new pipe" aroma which comes with every new pipe

Edit: This is the most amazing pipe I've ever owned. After 4 bowls, this pipe is TOTALLY broken in and smokes like a veteran. And it's happy with any kind of tobacco. I can't believe it!!! Must be the #13 on it and the fact that I've received it on Friday, the 13th!
