Hi "Ya'll" from Alabama! I've been lurking this site for a while and figured it was time to register and get involved. In reading Puff Daddy's Sticky about, "a bunch of guys sitting on a huge deck patio in the back yard of an upscale house in the mountains... with Cushy chairs and end tables everywhere covered with ashtrays and the occasional Scotch bottle", I knew this was a place where I'd feel right at home.
I've been smoking pipes and cigars for quite a while now, but honestly I had never taken it "seriously" until this last year when I started making pipes for myself. It was then that I realized I'm a complete novice pipe smoker. Sure, I did all the homework on how to pack it, light it, keep it lit and so on, but I never gave much thought to what tobaccos were out there. I just knew I wanted a notch up from what Walgreens had to offer . A friend of mine, also on this forum, recently gave me 3 new tobacco's to try which gave me a taste of what's out there and a curiosity to try more.
I've also taken the pipes themselves more seriously. I never knew my Ben Wade Danish Freehand wasn't supposed to gurgle, or that I shouldn't have to remove the stem mid-smoke several times to remove the moisture... But with the help of a few wonderful master pipe carvers over the last year or so, I've come a long way. I now enjoy pipes that smoke cool and dry...and my poor neglected Ben Wade...well, I'm sure she understands.
I'm here to learn, and I look forward to soaking up the vast knowledge you guys have to offer. And, I hope to be able to give back some day as well.
I look forward to meeting some of you.
Brian.
