I may have been the one who bought uberhuberman's discarded Northern Briar. Whomever it was on this site that I got if from did me a favor...as it's likely among my three top pipes...smoking the blends I like with perfection each and every time.

Glad you grabbed it, I didn't even know it was available.

Ian Walker is a wonderful gent, and attends several pipe shows in the USA every year. He brings a fine assortment of his pipes in all price ranges and I personally enjoy their smoking qualities very much. Here's a photo of a Regal that I've had for several years and is one of my favorite pipes.

Is that a picture of a huge Boswell behind the Northern Briar?

Boswell makes some big, oddly shaped pipes (at times) but I think that is just a big hunk of briar.
That does make a great photo background. Where does one find a chunk like that?

Hedge Apple is my guess...
Doc has his sources!

Gentlemen,
The massive briar burl that I have is what I normally use as a backdrop for pipes I sell on the eBay site. It is a large beautiful burl with the tree trunk attached which is not in the photo. I acquired it many years ago from the Owl Shop in New Haven, CT. when the St. John family sold the business. Thanks for the inquiries and comments, but NO it is not a Boswell.

Pretty neat backdrop Doc, and distinctively yours!

That's a fantastic backdrop! I bet there could be a good handful of beautiful pipes made from it.

The more I look at it, I don't think that's briar. I think it's uberhuberman's BRAIN!!!
:lol!: :lol!: :lol!:

No, seriously, I laughed for a solid 30 seconds after I saw this. Hilarious!

Now all we have to do is find Pinky!

Speaking of...

GREAT MOMENTS IN TELEVISION CULTURE:

Snowball: Pinky, I have a joke for you...Knock, Knock!

Pinky: Well then, it's not a very funny joke, is it?

"They're Pinky and the Brain. They're Pinky and the Brain..."

Oh man, they were probably the best thing about Animaniacs. And that's saying something!

The thing that wound up getting it booted only a few weeks later was a) the size (Northern Briar pipes can be pretty hefty), b) the chamber in relation to the size (enormous for me)
These are two reasons that I hadn't, until this evening, found a NB that called to me. I've been jonesing for one of his pipes...love the whole working/living on a boat, love the Rox cut rustication, and hear the bits are superb. They were on and off ebay last year or so, but all freaking huge. But I snagged one today that's a group 4 size, Rox, and a bulldog...the combo for me. If it was a cumberland bit, I'd be in Nirvana!

The Billiard & the (Straight) Dublin (a bent Dublin being a Yaughtsman/Woodstock) are beautifully done. Doing "simple" classic shapes like those WELL is a lot more difficult than people seem to imagine.

:face:

I looked at one at a pipe show this past weekend. I think less refined is a good description. One of his major sellers has described him as "getting better". The one I looked at was $200, and thought it was probably worth that, just found something else I liked better.
