I am trying to find my stride with good ol' regular burley, which often tastes bitter to me.
Try C&D Pegasus and PS Pressed Burley

I am dredging the memory banks. Were you the one who dd not care for Uhle's 00 and sold it to me? If so skip the PS Pressed Burley recommendaton.

Aged Burley Flake is very good but expensive.
Where does Pegasus fall on the c&d spectrum? I've not had that one but I see it pop up on threads from time to time.

I'm waiting to try the ODF, and am a bit hesitant due to the suspected nic bomb I'll have on my hands.
no no - not an issue with ODF. i'm very nic sensitive (can't smoke any of Greg Pease's stuff) and LOVE ODF.

doody.
Good to hear, cause I'm sucking down GLP Lat blends fine. Haven't been able to finish a bowl of EMP though.

Thanks for the recommendations, Tom.

Pegasus has been on my list for a while. A Bob Runowski blend I believe. Haunted Bookshop, Old Joe Krantz and Epiphany were also his recipes.

Yes, I sold you the Uhle's 00. Loved the flavor, but it was like lava on my tongue. Bite at charring light, serious body chemistry mismatch. That said, I'll take your suggestion and skip the PS Pressed Burley. ;)

Figured I'd get this thread going again, as this blend has now been out for a few weeks. Personally, I can't stop smoking it! This blend is a masterpiece in my opinion and I really think MacBaren is absolutely killing it with their HH series. I'm definitely going to be stockpiling this stuff for the cellar in the near future....it is just THAT good IMO! What's everyone else have to say?

Here is my TR eval of Pegasus. FWIW, Black Cavendish in a blend often makes it taste thin and a little musty to me - just a feature of my taste buds. Pegasus does not have either of these qualities for me. It is a Bob Runowski blend.

"This is an excellent burley blend. I can see some black cavendish in the loose tobacco, but it is not flavored. There is not much Virginia here, but it contributes to a slightly sweet note from time to time. This is mostly burley goodness. The taste profile has some oats and is slightly bitter from time to time.

Think of a slightly stronger Carter Hall with no topping. If you like burley, this is a great smoke. There is a certain satisfying quality to this blend."

The two or so bowls of Pegasus I've had fresh have been Burley forward, unoticable amount of BC, and enough VA sweetness to make it not too earthy/harsh to enjoy (for my palate). Maybe I'll fire up a bowl tomorrow morning!

Isn't that what is used for the dark fired Ky?

(Thanks for the offer, but I feel a bit overwhelmed at the moment - I still have a massive order inbound with the 20% HH sale)
Yes. Dark Fired Kentucky is burley, smoke cured obviously. I do enjoy it, exceptions aside, mostly as a condiment.

I am trying to find my stride with good ol' regular burley, which often tastes bitter to me.
Yes to this. DFK is Burley based, but the curing makes a HUGE difference. Some people like latakia but not other orientals, and it can be the same way with air-cured vs. fire-cured burley.

I was hoping for a hot pressed lat bomb or something.
Pirate Kake, I'll send you a chunk if you're interested.
I don't think that's HOT pressed, since I don't believe C&D own the machinery to hot-press stuff. I'm not sure anyone on this continent does. The heat during the pressing is part of what gives FVF, BBF, and ODF a distinct aspect of their flavor. I happen to love what a hot press does for a blend. The hot press is another distinct part of the process (like curing) which can take the same leaf and make it into something that tastes different.

I'm not sure I will want to try this one.

I'm quite happy with ODF and Latakia Flake and also have a little stash of Irish Flake at hand.

Besides these, I have some C & D Burley Flakes # 1, 2 & 3; GL Pease Cumberland.

Smoking a bowl of it now. Smooth and delicious, really strong. I have quite a buzz going.
