Just bought a trans Barling from Marty Pulvers for the grand sum of $35.00. He says the tenon is a bit short but workable. Walker Briar says they can do a stem for $25.00.

I'm excited to smoke old wood for the first time!

Looks like a nice one ya got there! Trans/pre-trans, it doesn't matter, Barling used good wood and made GOOD pipes! Enjoy

Imagine how the pipe feels about this!!
Enjoy, and share your observations!

That'll smoke like a little champion, $25 for a new fitted stem, excellent price.

The do the delrin tenon for $18. That's a nice looking original.

Chuck, my cat Keiko doesn't take much interest in the pipe world. She prefers cigars and is partial to '26 Padrons. Your cat Cooter on the other hand, being a more affable fellow, might.:)

Again Yak, if I may.

I remember some years back that you said that you bought old wood and then sent it off to LL for a new stem and opening. That is my plan with the Barling. When I mentioned this to Mr. Pulvers, he questioned spending for a precision stem ($50) for such a cheap pipe. But I've never had a pipe that has been opened, which for me includes an open stem. A cheap stem won't perform nearly as well, or so I think. In the end I would be spending $100 on the wood, the precision stem and the opening. That appears to me to be money well spent. Hell, it's easy to spend $2-$300 on an estate.
