This last year or so has been a year of change, all in the right direction, which I'm really pleased about. I've left the organisation that I was a part of for nearly 27 years (more about that later); applied, interviewed for and landed a new role that I'm very much enjoying; have bought our first house which we're all tremendously excited about; and are now going through the upheaval of a house move - very stressful.

Which gets me to the question...

This will be my 14th move to a new abode in those 27 years and we are now finally settling down. How many times have you chaps and chapettes moved over the years?

It would be difficult for me to count the number of times I've moved, since as a wee lad my parents moved multiple times. But since I was old enough to remember (~age 4 or so) I reckon it's in the vicinity of 12 times.

I have but one move yet to make when I retire in another 3 years or so, and that will be the very last one until my time on this earth is finally up.

Best wishes on your move David, I don't envy any bit of the hassle you must be going through.

Cheers,

RR

...Thanks Rande. You'd think after so many moves it'd seem easier! Hey, we'll be fine, it's just tough in the moment.

Where do you see yourself settling Rande. Somewhere near to where you are now or a complete change?

I'm setting my sights on Arid-zona mate. As I've said here before, it's where I was born and I figure I might as well die there too. Frankly I love a hot dry climate.

The exact place has yet to be determined, but I do have a few areas in mind that I'll be checking out in due course. I can tell you though it's not going to be the greater Phoenix or Tucson area, as they're too heavily populated.

So good-bye to the Pac NW with all its rain 75% of the year, snow (at my elevation), damaging windstorms with power outtages that are measured in days and even weeks in some cases, earthquakes that happen surprisingly regularly (I've been through 4 noticeable ones since my arrival here in '90 - the largest of which was 6.9 or 7.2 depending on which report you believe), exploding volcanoes (Mt. St Helens back in '80, with plenty of her brethren awaiting like a time bomb in the Cascade range), high taxes and an unfavorable political situation. Is that enough for thee?

Nay, I'll look to the desert SW with other wonders like things that crawl and slither and can fell one in a bite or sting. And it will also be devoid of things such as tornadoes or hurricanes. Of course there may be dust storms and the occasional flash flood. But I'm up for the challenge!

Seriously though, the climate ultimately appeals to me. I really don't mind dry and hot heat. Heat combined with high humidity has zero appeal, which is why I don't choose Florida, despite it's appeal to retirees. After all I grew up mostly in the upper midwest, and am well familiar with that syndrome!

So there you have it mate. TMI probably, but I'm not one to be short winded sometimes!

Cheers,

RR

I was born into a nomadic tribe. I am in a house where I have lived just over 8 years. That is a record for me. I am counting 14 different places I called home. This does not count dorm rooms.

My father was also an Episcopal priest - an itinerant worker in the fields of the Lord.

Just tallied up all my moves. I'm on my 14th abode currently Stick. I hope you move goes smoothly for you mate.

Cheers

Tim

As best as I can remember I've moved 11 or 12 times.I don't plan on ever moving again.I really hate it..Good Luck to you.

Seems like most of my life has been living out of a ruck sack or a foot locker. Though I don't envy your move, I'm glad of your new abode, and wish you the best of times!

Wow, that sounds like a big change Rande. I'm only moving 5 miles away from where I am now. Totally get the heat thing though. Moving to the hotter parts of the Europe, most especially the Med, is a popular move for retirees who can afford it and can rationalise the split from family. No earthquakes or tornadoes there either!

Stick, although I've only moved house twice, I do realise what a stressful time it can be and how easy it is to lose things, sometimes permanently, in the process.
For this reason I am offering my services to 'look after' all your non-Aro tobaccos (note - Lakelands are not aromatics) while you carry out this complex operation. Just send them to me and I will 'take care of them' for you.

I second that and as a 30+ years as a road warrior I understand living out of a duffle bag for days and weeks at a time. I hate it and can't wait to retire.

We love our second home in Green Valley it's a great, low cost of living, pretty much self contained town that is 20 mins from everything Tucson has to offer and about 2 hour from Phx and Ye Olde Pipe Shop.
I don't think Mrs lax will ever leave our family and life on the Mississippi River but I would in a heartbeat and never look back.

I say, that's very sporting of you old chap.  It's times like these that you really begin to understand who your true friends are... :suspect: ;)

Thanks Wiz.

I've spent a bit of time living out of a ruck sack too and some other 'work' related stints. Here's an example of my more usual temporary abode...

My wife and I have moved four times in the last 44 years. The last time was 22 years ago. We plan stay in this house for the duration.

Stick I hope all goes smoothly with this move. As you know planning is the key. Take care and be safe. :)

Stick, mate, congrats on the new job and your first house purchase - which must not be an easy thing in the UK, considering the cost of real estate!
The Missus and I also purchased, last year, our first house.
As for your question, my answer would be, too many times over the last 30 years.

Hi LG,

Thanks for the congrats. Yup, house prices in Blighty makes your eyes water. This is a new build so it comes with a 10 year guarantee and is super efficient in terms of energy. The place I'm in now is shocking with respect to efficiency. In the winter I may as well throw pound coins out the window. It's been a good house to us though and saw our family through some particularly challenging times. Time to move on now though to write a new chaper.

Thanks for the rec Dave. I'll add that to the list of places to check out.

Congrats on the new digs Stick! I wish you many years of peaceful respite there. As to how many times have I moved. Well if memory seves me I'm at 18 or 20 now. I'd have to actually look things up to be sure lol. Don't be afraid to wrangle yourself some helpers. Teenage boys do a whole lot of work for a little cash and a good feed. As you get older you come to appreciate that fact.

congrats on the move stick, I hate moving and we have endured it 7 times in 10 years.. the joys of relying on private landlords not to act like complete arses.

I hope it goes well for you and you don't end up hating each other at the end of it lol..

but its a new chapter and new fresh memories are just ready to be made, a new house just before Christmas will make this year amazing for you and your loved ones.
