The loons are out, it seems.

Two or more relatively new guys (my guess) are chasing an image in their heads, inflamed by romantic imagination.

It's a nice old (if the pictures are accurate, my strong hunch is it's refinished) "O" -- a respectable blue-collar pipe with a nickel band.

Even if it were a top grade with a silver napkin ring, it still wouldn't be that freaking rare. Or valuable.

Then again, it's demand that drives value -- not scarcity.

:face:

Very likely.
Chance Whittamore does some great restoration work.

Look at it now!!! Those guys are going crazy

Or maybe I shouldn't say that, it might be one of our brothers bidding there

Chance is smiling all the way to the bank, good for him and/or the consignor. I'll have to send him some of my old Patent Peterson's.

That pipe would only be worth the current bid price if it had been owned and smoked by Michael Collins himself.

I think we'd be looking at very different numbers in that case. Hell, I'd think they were getting a good price if that were the case. :p

Since that isn't the case, what are these guys thinking? Or are they thinking at all?

I've been complaining estate Petes have been selling at crazy prices lately, but that's just over the top. :| Seems like those with a few cents to rub together are really struttin' their stuff just because they can. I don't get it.

Funny thing, the term "worth" is. When an item, regardless what it is, is up for sale in the manner things are sold on the 'prey are, the final selling price IS what it is WORTH. It sold for X amt. of currency so THAT is what it is WORTH. Would I or many of us here pay that amt? Probably not, but to the buyer who pays the price, THAT is what it is WORTH. We get so enamered with our opinions that we place a level of veracity which is based on personal opinion. Just my 2 cents worth

Which is why it kills me when auctions, antique stores and junk shops often have some ebay listing printed out and accompanying the goods to be bought--they're quoting the asking price, not the sold price. Even the sold price is determined by a specific market, which could be different from region to region. One item could be hot shyte in one town and meaningless in another.

Value is demand, though, as mentioned earlier.

Sometimes I really hate ePrey. :| And not just because I'm fed up with idiots not packaging goods to be shipped so they don't break.

It's OVER $1,250.00 now ! A little over an hour to go. This one will be talked about over on the IPPC Forum I'm sure !! Wish I was the seller ! I LOVE Capitalism :p

It is still at $1250.00 with 50 min left the only problem I see is the high bidder has never bought on ebay before. I am sure that the seller is as shocked as all of us are. MIKE
