 At the risk of further exposing my low IQ... I have a couple of the round 100g tins of Orlik Golden Sliced, one for now and some for aging in the cellar. Went to open one of the tins... the lid is on there pretty good. It wouldn't yield to prying with the fingernails... didn't seem to twist off. Now, I do own tools... but would like to avoid disfuguring the tin to where it won't seal well while I smoke my way thru 100g.

What to do... What to do... :?:

I've always used either a blow torch to cut it off or a mallet and splitting wedge to burst is off....

But most people just stick a coin in the slot and pry just enough to allow the vacuum to break.

Uh, talk about bringing a gun to a knife fight. ;)

A small wedge of C4 under the lip of the lid would work. Just be ready to inhale real deep right after it goes off

Those tins can be a real b#$@ch. I swear I have bent a quarter opening them.

I use a simple flathead screwdriver convieniently found on my swiss ary knife.

Hey Dock... since your here... let me blend this question into one on the subject of aging as well. I noticed from pics of your cellar that you have some of the tins of Orliks Golden Sliced... Are you planning on aging some of that IN THE TINS? or for aging would you remove the contents and place into a Ball jar?

Ruger .44 cal Vaquero works for me. Then you get to enjoy the smell of burnt cordite along with the lovely room note of the tobacco.

Quit giving the man a hard time!

All it takes is a twist of a coin. I generally use a quarter. :D

Hey Tim,

Yep. I bought them with the intent of long term aging in their tins. I'll be enjoying these around 2020 or 2025. OGS ages wonderfully and their seals are very secure as you well know  I just popped a 50g tin from 2000 and it's just awesome!

Since I transfer the contents of the tin to a pint jar immediately after opening, I don't have to worry about damage I may cause said tin. That said, I first try a quarter but if that doesn't work, I, like Dock, resort to a flat-head screwdriver. This works very quickly.

Would .30-06 Black tips be overkill? Im just saying it is armor piercing ammo... On another note my wife did put a 5.45X39 round though the overhead metal support last time we were at the range so that might work too.

I've often used a thin-bladed butter knife to slip up under the lip (straight up from below, not horizontal as a wedge) just to break the vacuum. After the soft "whoosh" they all unscrew easily. Of course, having my 2 1/2 lb. ball peen hammer right next to it lets the tin know it better come along quietly.

Natch

Find a Truck Stop, Then Locate a friendly looking/acting Truck Driver (they are rare) Have him drive over the tin equals opened tin and pressed flakes. Guarenteed

In Canukville we have a dollar coin we affectionately call the "Loonie" because it has a "Loon" on it. It was made for opening such tins.

Ed the aroma from the driver would mess up the tobacco.
