This is what makes PAD so deadly!

Once the victim is infected he uncontrollably spreads the filthy contagion...

I want a 408 now.....although I might settle for a sandblast Pete POY 2012!

Checked 'em out: the ebony one is calling to me. That shape looks really nice in black. Wow. :D

Peterson pipes do look nice, rugged, lots of fun shapes, I like em a lot. I just wish they approached their drilling differently. Like the dip staining they used to do and stopped, I'm hoping they change their practice in drilling as well. I have to approach their pipes a lot more carefully to end up with a good smoker. Stanwell is a more conservative Danish approach, I really like their designs too, but for different aesthetic reasons. Their engineering is where they rise above Peterson, their pipes just smoke better right out of the gate.

Ah. I thought it was the P-lip. My favorite smoker among my 408s is the one with the fishtail. It seems to have a draw that is a little more open than the others. The P-lips aren't bad at all, but they seem to be slightly pickier about packing and keeping the smolder going, neither going out or getting overheated. Slightly pickier. Nothing that has me contemplating the drill.

Also, if you think a 408 is chunky, did you ever notice how much the Sav 320 looks like a bee-stung 408? Some like the look, though. The smooth 320 is ok; the rusticated is a bit over-the-top imho.

Pipe trivia Q: What term in traditional pipe nomenclature do you think best fits the 408? I've argued on behalf of short Prince. I'm not sure that it qualfies as chubby, at least in comparison to the Sav 320 which I've seen advertised as a chubby, bent apple.

Kevin, I only do fishtails and acrylic, so it really limits my Peterson choices. I've had several system pipes with P lips over the years, they just weren't my cup of tea. I won't knock em, but personally I don't really like em. I still do have a couple, but I keep em for sentimental reasons more than anything.

The drilling I refer to is their practice of boring the shank out with a deep round bottomed hole that leaves a rather large gap beyond the end of the tenon. Added to this is their consistent practice of drilling the airway high in that hole, which means passing a cleaner can be a bit of a challenge. Seems to vary a lot from pipe to pipe, even with identical model numbers. My 999's all pass a cleaner except one, and it's a military mount so it doesn't matter. Usually a crink in the end of the cleaner finds the draft hole, but not always. With the collars they use, there's no reason they couldn't channel into the side of the mortise so a drill bit could be centered like most pipes. That would be additional steps, more expense I suppose.

Not quite an apple, not quite an author. A hybrid of these perhaps?

GK, I don't want to borrow a pipe. If I like it, you might not hear from me again. I'll find one eventually. The 408 shape is a hidden gem, and I think this may be my next Pete acquisition.... Thanks for the insight, Brothers: especially about the drilling. I don't mind having a bit more mortise than tenon--I have a solution that works for it quite well.
Fair enough. I probably wouldn't have given it back either. I bid on a black blasted Rosslare just like that last week, but didn't win it. It went for $100. Not bad, but with holiday shopping and all, it wasn't the bargain I was looking for. I would advise you to NOT handle one until you can afford to buy it. Hold it in your hand, and you just might fall in love.
If your airway solution involves trumpeting the inlet on the tenon, you'll be pleased to know that there's plenty of material to work with. It wouldn't surprise me if this shape was once intended for a 9mm "Eurofilter".

GK, on all of my 80S models, there's a ton of material for "trumpeting" the inlet at the tenon on the stem. Almost to a fault...some thick mambajambas. Takes a little while longer, but the width of the tenon can be handled accordingly. :)

I'm over 9mm/6mm filter pipes, cobs being an exception. Though as an experiment, my one remaining 9mm filter pipe, a one "Hilson Shark" (the blue and white stained weirdo) I fitted with one of those "filter blanks" that attempt to fill the gap. I ended up trumpeting both ends of this little $2 doodah, installed it, and it does okay. Too much work though, if I can avoid it. I'll never see another Hilson Shark, likely, so I figure it's worth it to muck around with it. *shrug*

408 is still on my list. I have good luck with Petes, the shapes I like really appeal to me, and I'll have to track one down. Likely in Sacramento, unless my local Tinder Box feels like ordering a bunch of Petes and including a few for me to browse.
