Was over at the STG/Lane site and found this little short primer on pipe smoking and thought " .... how much of this runs counter to what our resident 'experts' here believe".   Let's see some heated discussion now !!

The only thing I saw was the Cavendish explanation. Cavendish is a process not a casing. You don't need to add any flavors to Cavendish.

Heated discussion? Let's see some well reasoned, calm discourse instead. There's no necessity for all that much heat, thanks.

And calling for heat puts you in what I would think would be an unwanted position here...that of an instigator. It's close to trolling.

Of course, we know you weren't really serious...just a figure of speech, etc., etc., etc.

Watching. Always watching.

:suspect:

Great site, always enjoy going there. I am not a "resident expert." That said, I read nothing outlandish in PS 101. Their method is roughly how I pack my pipe, although there are differences depending on the type (i.e., RR, flake, cubed, curlies, etc.). FTRPLT

Yeah, take that, Mikey! There's a fine line here, and you better walk it. Reference my profile, under "humor."

[Big ol' winking eye.]

Now we can talk about the "Dick Cut" style of cigar cutting and that different way of loading yer pipe, where you sorta jam a wad in the top and then tear the loose stuff off. What's that called?

But who watches the watchers?

Functional misapprehension. If you've already closed the tin/jar/pouch/bag/etc., it's overconfidence. An ensuing rationalization that you can use the loose stuff as tinder is making excuses.

Then there's also daring.

Meh - I just wanted an excuse to post a picture of a cute little kitty.

On topic, I did raise an eyebrow at STG's definition of "cavendish." Not altogether surprising considering Lane/STG blends lean towards cavendished tobacco that's been cased/topped pretty heavily, but it does seem to be a bit of misinformation.

I noticed the same thing.

I was / wasn't as it seems when discussions of method or "facts" about pipe smoking come up here it get's quite warm in tone   Most of the items in this little primer were what was told me when I started smoking over 40 years ago!! This sort of thing just gives truth to "...one man's floor is another's ceiling"

Weird. Next time you notice a heated discussion let me know. I'd like to see what it looks like. I've seldom seen one. The other mods keep deleting them or whatever and then telling me, maybe when I grow up... :)

I didn't see anything inflammatory in that article. Its a decent starting point to new smokers. Every article you read has a different take on things. I just gather the info and try it. If it works, great. If not, oh well.

NOW GET OFF MY YARD YOU PIPE SMOKING HIPPIES!!!

Sorry, just wanted to throw that out there. Hahahahahaha.

The FRANK METHOD! That's what it was called.

Do a google on it and watch one of the myriad movies out there. Really interesting. And it does work well.

When I first started smoking I was told ".... here's how you load your pipe" and shown this method. I never heard it given a name as such till I started getting on the interweb a few years ago and all of a sudden ".... here's how you load your pipe" is how Frank does it!! How does Bob do it?

Not much to add but, 'press firmly' on the 3rd pack? That's never worked for me...
