My neighbor, who I've introduced to pipe smoking, is an old pot headed hippy. He named his daughter Marley, you guessed it. He likes the simplicity of the pipe and the relaxing nature of the hobby. He prefers the three pack method.
I try different styles and found things I like about each. So I pack according to the pipe and tobacco.

Most primers I've ever seen use the 1, 2, 3 method. Each third dribbled in then tamped, successively more and more firmly. 

The Frank thing, after using a pipe for close to forty years, was the first I'd ever seen suggesting one pinch. Briefly, the Frank Method is a method for packing tobacco into a smoking pipe initially developed by Achim Frank for use in pipe smoking competitions. The Frank method involves compacting the tobacco from the sides without compressing the top. This process leads to a firm layer of tobacco at the top of the pipe bowl with a looser layer beneath, without over-compressing the top layer. This firm top layer and looser bottom layer produce a long burn with fewer re-lights, suitable for competition smoking or general pipe smoking. Totally different than the 1, 2, 3 thing that is a top down approach, applying more successively greater pressure from the top.


Then there's the 'gravity feed' method like that used for cube cuts that dribble the tobacco in with no real downward pressure applied. 


So that's three distinct methods. All workable under different conditions.


I'm waiting for a continuous hopper fed system, like a pellet stove, so the thing just keeps going!  lol

I usually take a pinch drop it in the bowl and tap the bowl sides to let it settle at the botton, then another pinch and do the same only I then press down with my finger and finally a third pinch that rises slightly above the bowl rim and press down firmly till it's all level with the rim then it's match time!! If the 'baccy is not as dry as i like I'll let that bowl sit for some tme before re-pressing it down and putting a match to! It's the method I use probably 95 % of the time with 98% of the 'baccy I smoke! Been doing it this way now for almost 40+ years, don't know what the name of it is, only that it's worked for me all these years!! :twisted: :twisted:

I've tried the Frank method and a few of the others, but I always go back to the ol' three-step method for ribbon cut and rubbed-out flakes. Sometimes cubed flakes depending on what blend it is.
