Brothers (and Sisters),

I am still deep in the beginner stages of learning how to properly pack and smoke the pipe- (as much as I would like to state that I am an experienced expert beginner!). However, I am really, rather enjoying the process (Actually, really enjoying the process).

That being said, I have researched the health aspects of smoking the pipe (notably,- and my personal favorite- that pipe smokers live longer than non- smokers).

I have really just been wondering about your negative and/ or positive health experiences with the pipe......

And, I have really not found more than 2 or 3 real statements or in depth studies that actually address the subject...

Many thanks.

As you might have read, cigar and pipe smokers have been found to have high degrees of mouth and larynx cancer and tooth/gum problems which have been possibly linked to ingestion of nicotine. Don't ignore the FACT that you are ingesting a known carcinogenic substance into a part of your body. many pipe smokers, especially those who were heavy cig smokers DO inhale, as we ALL do at at tmes, but pipe tobacco is not treated with the same chemicals as tobacco used for cigs and much of it is WAY lower in nicotine content than cig tobacco. Even with this knowledge, I ENJOY tobacco and have decided that a pipe is how i want to ingest this chemical into my body regerdless of it's consequences. Enjoy your pipe but don't buy into the sham idea that there is "no problems" with smoking , of ANY kind.

If you smoke, you will die. Guaranteed. Strangely, the same holds true if you don't smoke. Once I understood this, and got over my rage and sense of betrayal by our keepers, I overcame my temperance and moderation and now smoke as much as I can.

If it's good or helps, keep doing it.

If it's bad or harms, stop doing it.

The end. :)

Thanks all!

On an off note: thanks tiltjlp for the Corncob Primer and other related guides- it really got me my start in this whole thing!

This is one of the few threads I remember wherein the actual dangers of pipe smoking are openly discussed. My take is that pipe and cigar smoking contribute to being able to breathe, as one avoids emphysema; but continuing to breathe means that you'll live long enough to develop cancer. This really makes me laugh.

One point..riffing off of Monbla's post.. Nicotine is not a carcinogen. It's not the bad guy in tobacco use.

There are a few clues. Purple Nike's, the mothership, Kool Aid.

Yep. It's a poison, which is why y'all feel so funny if you smoke too much of it, but it ain't the larger problem.

Any of you wanna Chicken Little and nerd out? Here's a good starting list:

(note the careful placement of the word "inhalation.")

I've been smoking pipes (exclusively) for 50 years and can still shovel snow, dressed in t-shirt and jeans, at the pace of the pups on my street. If I'd had any idea I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself ;)

But seriously friends --

In all my Internet searches, I've never found a study limited to long-term smokers of pipes. Yes, there are studies that include pipe smokers -- but not exclusive pipesmokers. Typically the anti-studies report on cigarette smokers who occasionally turn to the pipe, bringing with them the habits and physical addictions of cig smoking. It puts me in mind of a relative who smokes 2+ packs of cigs a day, inhales, and turns to a pipe when I'm around. He has some worrisome physical symptoms, but they're not caused by his pipe. Nevertheless, statistically, he probably shows up among pipe smokers.

The anti- studies also just blandly assume that if the world could be rid of tobacco, we'd all be ten pounds underweight, able to compete in marathons and have spotless lung x-rays. Actually, getting out of bed in the morning is only the first in a long list of everyday things we do that incur possibly fatal consequences.

As the original post noted, there are credible reports that pipe smokers gain some health benefits from their avocation. I find my pipe to be an incredibly effective way to take a nice, relaxing time out. I can't think of aything that would be an acceptable substitute.

And finally, there is this irrefutable fact to consider: There is nothing society can do that will prolong my alotted years. So as a full grown male sdult, I'll choose my own entertainments with full knowledge that everything I may do has some, possibly disadvantageous consequence. If I want to take up riding a Ninja motorcycle, I realize the result may be different than, say, snoozing in a La-Z Boy. But I don't want to die in a La-Z Boy. In the meantime, well-intentioned advice isn't needed or welcome and may be taken as provocation.

As Sen. Feinstein said the other day, "I'm not a sixth grader, so scram." ;) Or something like that.

I would put the overall function and condition of my lungs against any "health nut" that runs/jogs/bikes in the oh-so-clean air of Los Angeles. Go ahead, let's take a picture of both sets of lungs. Challenge accepted.

you all know that something is going to kill you, too much pork, too much beef, too many eggs, too much booze, and too much tobacco. I guess a lot of it can boil down to the amount of activity you have. Sure if you sit on you ass, eat bacon and lard sandwiches, drink copious amounts of suds and smoke like a freight train you will most likely develop health problems. Now I know a bunch of old dudes (80+) that have pretty much done this all their lives with the exception of sitting on their *****! They are old and in good shape to be their ages. So activity and good dose of manual labor could be in order. OR____________ maybe we could be like some of our political friends who want to ban everything and think-----
If it taste good and makes you feel good spit it out, If it taste like **** and makes you feel like **** swallow it. As for my part I will take the former.
