I bought a new pipe about 2 1/2 weeks ago from LJ Peretti in Boston. It's a Virgin Deluxe in a bent bulldog shape, only cost 50 bucks so I'm aware its not super high quality. The problem is it smokes hot. It doesn't have much of a cake on it yet as I only smoke it once a day, so it's only been smoked 16-17 times. I'm wondering if it's the lack of cake or the quality of the briar(hope its not this). Any tips you guys can give me are appreciated.

Yeah, I've had two pipes that smoked hot initially and improved greatly after they formed a good cake,,,,I was breaking them in with Va. but changed to burley cause I think it smokes cooler (CH),,,after a good cake formed I had no problems.

How thick are the walls of the bowl? Is the tobacco you're smoking extremely wet? Many things can factor into a hot smoke. I do think, however, after a decent cake forms the problem will fix itself. Might do well to try tobaccos that smoke slow until the cake takes shape.

I think I figured it out. Being a relative beginner, I was packing my bowls too tight. I just smoked some stormfront out of it and I packed it more lightly....much cooler smoke.

Too tight, too wet, too fast.

I learned the hard way myself, and tongue bite is a mutha.

The nice thing about pipes is they kind of train the user. Even from pipe to pipe...they'll train you to smoke slower, pack looser, use drier tobacco, and yeah, building up that cake will make a lot of difference. It's no big deal, that $50 beauty will smoke nice in no time. 8)

Yeah I'm starting to learn. Thank god the tongue bite issue hasn't reared it's ugly head since I stopped smoking cheap aromatics.
