Pipes take over the Tobacco Shop

It is always fun when this just happens and there are more pipe smokers than cigar smokers in the tobacco shop.  It happened again this weekend.  I showed up and was the only pipe smoker.   Then 2 guys I had never seen before showed up and 1 started with a cigar and then switched to pipe while the other smoked a pipe the whole time.  One was down visiting from Kansas.  I shared some 6 Pense with him and I think he liked it.  Was supprised that he was smoking Kajun Kake as that is my fav.  Then one of the regulars showed up who smokes a pipe on occasion but is more often cigar showed up and went for the pipe.  4 out of 6 smoking pipes isn't bad for an average day.  Our official Pipe Club night is this Wed.  Hopefully we have a good turnout.

One thing I never understood - there are places (rarely anymore) that allow cigars - bars with a special room, etc. - but specifically do not allow pipes.

I never got that.

The closest "decent" (selection wise) place near me (Blackhorse knows it too) sells pipes, tobacco, and cigars - and have a small 5 seat lounge with a TV. Cigars are fine, but no pipe smoking allowed inside.

I have a theory that if you show up and smoke your pipe, eventually other pipe smokers will start to show up at that shop or you will convert some of the cigar guys into at least occasional pipe smokers. I have found that one of our hardcore cigar guys has a pretty good pipe collection and often brings a pipe I haven't seen in to smoke a bowl with me when he knows I'll be there.

It has taken a while to see this. I've often been the lone pipe smoker among 8 to 10 other folks smoking cigars, but now some of those same folks have bought at least one pipe and smoke it on occasion. I know there are some shop regulars who never set foot in the lounge until we had a pipe club night as well. Some folks aren't comfortable being the only one. I don't mind and hopefully more folks will be comfortable smoking a pipe if I'm already there smoking one.

I find it very strange that a place is cigar only. Especially if they sell pipe tobacco. Very strange. I could see it if they of course wanted to tie the use of the lounge to a purchase and didn't have pipe tobacco available.

I would love to have a place nearby where pipers meet and smoke. I currently have to talk to myself in the mirror. 'No I don't', '..yes you do..'

Before the draconian smoking ban took effect here in the socialist state of WA, there was a way great Tinder Box that I frequented. They had a smoking lounge in the rear with leather couches and chairs, big-screen TV, great stereo system, food, adult beverages (one of my brewery's best retail accounts for bombers), and a very efficient smoke extractor system. Yet one could smoke anywhere in the store.

They had a vast cigar humidor and sold pipes of all kinds, from baskets to factory pipes to expensive handmades, as well as very appointed tin and bulk selection. In fact one could sample a bowl of just about anything before committing to purchase. I bought a bunch of pipes there, including my original 3 Pete's and trusty Wiley.

While there were mostly cigar smokers there most days, there were plenty of pipers as well. We all got along just fine and never noticed any arrogance from the strictly cigar guys. Pretty sweet place and I was there regularly.

Alas, due to the overhead, the internet, and the ban on smoking inside any retail establishment they eventually closed up. What a great pity!

DireWolf I just read last night in Pipes and Tobaccos Magazine a story about a Tobacco shop that mentioned that in that state a business could apply for an exemption to the smoking ban for cigars only and sell food and have a bar or for all smoking and not serve food and drinks. If that shop sells food or drinks it may be that such a law is in effect in your state.

Now why do pipes get lumped in with cigarretes and cigars get special status?? Probably because the cigar companies have a better lobbying group.

I think the lounge near me (Salem) would allow it if I bought a cigar first. Rich's allows pipe smoking, but doesn't have a lounge.

Went to a couple of tobacco shops in Oregon (Portland Metro Area) last spring and found the same issue. Cigar smoke good, any other smoke bad. When I got to sample some blends of their own, I had to step something like fifty feet from the doors. As far as not smoking indoors, I get it, we all smoke here, and I ban indoor smoking. But how about something like a beer garden? Some sort of outdoor forum? Or even, the airport in Salt Lake City has smoking rooms with exhaust fans that will suck ideas out of your head. And that's in Mormanland! Tells me there is little 'reason' to the legislation. In Springfield, MO, there is a tobacco shop that has a sign posted "No smoke free environment available" on the entry...

Go fig.......

When I started smoking a pipe in 'Nam and got home, my father-in-law, who was a confirmed Edward's smoker took me to the old Edward's in N. Dallas one Saturday morning. As I recall, they opened around 9:00 am and we got there around 9;45 so as to get a stool to sit on. They had a semi-circular counter with around 12 stools at it and on Sat. mornings ALL stools would fill up by 10 am and more folks would come in to stand at the "bar" smoking and drinking the coffee they furnished and usually stay till around lunch. He would do this almost every Sat morning and I would often join him. 'Course, back then Edward's ONLY sold their tobaccos and pipes and most of the conversations were concerning Edward's blends and pipes. I did smoke one of their blends, Special Balkan, as most folks did not like my 759 that I would bring in in my roll-up :twisted: :twisted: BTW, they DID NOT sell cigars or cigs back then !! Those were the days !! :twisted:

As a general observation, this society has almost no spaces which are not strictly commercial, and most of those exceptions are under control of Government.

For example, there are bars, restaurants, and coffee shops, but these are places where you mostly go to buy and only then can hang out. There are no real hanging out places.

Ideally, there would be either (1) a shop so profitable that it could have a lot of space for people to just hang out, meet friends, get away from it all, etc. and/or (2) clubs to which people pay a yearly membership fee to have a place away from home.
