How is your Askwith?  do you have a morta?  I always wanted one.
No Morta, it's a strange looking Rhodesian/Canadian? Fine smoker. ;)

That is one of the coolest looking pipes I have seen. I wanted one but could not afford it.

I couldn't either,.......I purchased this one off of Rustymouse in the trading post here unsmoked for a very good price.

Don't like a bowl coating myself. In fact I've had Coastie3202 (John) remove them from several pipes recently, which included mostly Pete's.

Had one really discouraging experience with a new Pete which had a bowl coating, and that was the tipping point for me.

I understand why pipe factories like Peterson include this as a SOP. However I like to break in the pipe according to my SOP's!!

 ;)

Cheers,

RR

Peterson, for sure, has one of the worst bowl coatings. It usually ends with a mouthful of gooey carbonized juice.

Finally a breakthrough on bowl 24 or 25. Just did 2 bowls this A.M. with a pot of coffee and I finally taste the incredible tobacco - bottom 1/4 a bit sketchy yet - but forward progress is made. This should work out nicely. in 46 years of pipe smoking I have never experienced this situation. I hate having to put up with wasting 25 bowls of a fine tobacco to get the funk out - This, to me, is uncalled for!

But this could be a stellar pipe overall.

patience and perseverance was needed. Plus wasting all of that wonderful tobacco.

One final update: Bowls 35, 36, and 47 started shine. I am over the hurdle and maybe another 10 bowls and it should be a magnificent pipe.

The point of this thread was not to bash the pipemaker. That is why I did not mention him by name. but if this pipe was so bad to start and the coating was a nightmare you can bet al of his pipes have the same experience. That is why I said i would never by another of his. One should not have to waste 35 bowls of a magnificent tobacco to finally taste 1 nice bowl. That is terrible! I only smoked 1 tobacco a heavy latakia blend and that did not mask the coating experience and taste.

However, this should be a stellar smoker as well as looker!

To tell you the truth I've had some pretty nasty pipe break ins and they didn't even have a bowl coating.

I have had only one negative experience with a bowl coating. It was a Peterson. The first smoke was terrible. I worked at removing some of the coating but their coating is firmly in place. A second smoke showed some improvement, but still tasted bad. I gave up and stored the pipe. After two years I tried the pipe in question again and it was noticeably better.

I still don't reach for it. :-/

Sand it off with a dremel followed by micromesh. That's what Coastie3202 (John) did with mine and it was just the ticket!

I have several pipes made by Canadian carver Phil Trypis. If memory serves, he used a clay coating for his bowls, Not sure what the process was. But the effect was that Trypis pipes had a rep for breaking in quickly and smoothly and smoke sweet.

Coated, uncoated... I don't care really. The thing I find odd with some of the Pete's I've had new is that during the first few smokes I'll run a pipe cleaner through and get a bit of the stain. I only mention it because new Pete's have been brought up in this thread. Sorry to wander off topic. Forgive me.

I'll bet in a blind test very few could tell which bowl was coated and which wasn't. I think it's more of a head game with some... same as the Pete horror stories. just because you read it on the internet doesn't make it true but if you read it enough you start to believe it.

This year I purchased 3 Peterson pipes. Out of the three I have one. The other two were drilled poorly. The first one was a '14 St Patrick's day pipe, shape 107 (returned). The second is an Irish Made Army shape 120 (kept). And the third Pete was an Irish Made Army shape 69 (returned). The 69 shape is the one that I still have the pics showing the bad drilling. If you care to see 'em I'll post 'em.

While I do not bash them, I will not buy a new one, ever. I will buy vintage estate Petersons. In fact I have a 309 system at Walker Pipe Repair getting cleaned and fitted with a new stem to mimic the 4AB Basil Rathnone smokes in the Sherlock films.

So I guess I'm the guy that somebody's brother knows about.
