You have yours. I have mine.
Yeah, but I have a big cellar...and you don't. :lol!:

One more thing; Internet tobacco sales could
become a thing of the past at any moment.

I decided to sleep on it and then since I awoke from a bad dream I will add a bit. About my comment to Utah. I do things for reasons. I am building up a storage of tobacco for later.. Not much later maybe up to 3 years. I buy bulk to do that and store in small 8oz jars or taped tins. I bought a pound of FVF about a month ago.. The price was right. Half pound of BBF also. I have noticed that some very kind Brothers have been so kind as to gift me some tobacco samples since I have been here for such a short time. One Brother said he had more than he could smoke in a life time. I think this was very kind of them. Storing Tobacco and buying as you can afford it to do so is a dream of mine. But I buy reasonable amounts of each when I do it saving ( Cookies In The Jar ) for others. I hope that many tobacco blenders and retailers come into business and compete for our sales. I think that can bring the prices down if not keep them lower longer. Unlike computers and the like, Tobacco prices don't come down the longer a blend is out. When people pay large amounts of money for small tins what would you expect. If I go to the gas station I fill up when the prices are low for a spell. I can see why one would like to buy tobacco when the prices are lower.. Nuff said on that .. Hey Hermit.. You made me smile.. Reason my a*s.. Tell me something good Brother.. Do you know how long your going to live ? If your only a few ounces away from a lifetime supply you must have a good idea. I was also wondering when you get those ounces and have your life time supply ( Which Is Great ) If you buy more will you live longer ?? :lol!:
So I am heading back to bed without smoking my pipe cause its cold as heck outside. And I will dream of having enough tobacco in my basement to treat myself once in a while or some pipe smoking friends that stop over for a treat. Heck I may buy a bit extra within reason to gift out a couple years down the road to the new guys so as to give them a chance to try some great blends. Oh Hermit.. I wish you a very long life and many great days and nights of pipe smoking.. You have been a good soul and a kind brother in the past..

Chuck... :D

Thanks!
But if I croak before I smoke it all,
what do I care, I'll be dead.

Do all of you have provisions to make sure someone gets your tobacco when you die? I'm sure large masses of baccy has been taken out with the garbage by un-informed relatives.

Not to start a whole new debate either, but I've had my share of aged tobacco. Just opened a tin of 8 year old EMP last week to compare it to the new stuff, as a matter of fact. Age plays a factor, but in my opinion it is waaay overstated. I know that statement will blow some minds around here, but that's reality. I'm not knocking aging. It's a bonus. Newer tins are still quite enjoyable.

Look, people have all kinds of justification for what they do. You have yours. I have mine. I just wanted to make sure Frumplestiltskin had different points of view to help him make a choice. Mission accomplished.
Well I tend to agree with you on overstated age stuff, but I think it depends on which tobacco you are smoking. Every McClelland's Flake I have tried (and I am a fan of their tobacco) from new to 2001 are actually not a huge difference, some just not earth shaking. However then I opened some Cairo that was 2007 and after that very nice fruity smell and taste I had to know what new was like and I got to say it doesn't seem like the same tobacco at all. SO I will leave it that I agree about that one some tobacco, but on others, maybe a big enough difference that it is not overstated at all. I have been trying to figure out what made this particular tobacco so different than others I have tried.

Skip

Just to clarify, I do put away a few pounds of tobacco each year. It's just that it's for future enjoyment rather than from fear. I certainly wish I had put away a little Penzance.

Tobacco aside, one thing is for sure, hermits are not as "solitary and reclusive" as they used to be!
:lol!:

IMO, in time mail ordering tobacco will be outlawed and taxes will be over a $100 a lb. I've been stocking up for years.

My son will take the cigars.
If he doesn't want the pipes and
tobacco, I told him to call Pipestud.

Panic hoarding, like people did back during the phony "gas shortage" is self-evidently hysterical.

But the people who a) liked a drink now and then, b) saw prohibition coming down the road and c) laid in an ample supply of demon rum (or whatever) ahead of time spared themselves the choice of either going without or drinking (sometimes) poison.

I can think of worse ways to console myself over the way things are falling apart in time to come than with some 10-15-year-old Embarcadero, FVF and Union Square.

Just sayin'

I think if Big Brother decides to tax the common laborer into subtle slavery on pipe tobacco I will be looking for outlets on the gray money route. Our whole tax system needs to be flushed and reborn into a flat percentage that is fair and then let the tax people learn to live on what they get. After all we have to learn to live on what we earn. If it were up to the people to vote on what is fair and at the same time would work I am sure things would be in much better shape.. But as of now we are only allowed to vote on what the big boys let us vote on.
If I were to die all my pipes and tobaccos laying around would be boxed up and sent to a guy in Pretoria I know.. He can fix up what is needed on the pipes and use or pass them on to others.. The tobacco he can smoke or gift out as he so decides.. I sure hope they have good blends in my kind of heaven.. And a pipe that will last for eternity..
Now I will enjoy life and store up tobacco as I can afford it.. I was just thinking I have 3 50gm tins of Dan's Blue Note that I tinned a time back.. Auro's don't age well I heard so I will go open one up so as not to waste time on a good burning blend.. I had put them up to age but if it does no good to it why bother.. Enjoy this day as a gift Brothers...
Chuck...
P.S. Here is a photo I captured on a very windy snowy day.. I like the starkness of this to ponder on...

A lot of interesting opinions here guys. Thanks for the open and thought provoking ideas! This is the kind of stuff I really like about this Forum, well done BoB!

I received a call from an ex-pat who lives in Tasmania, which is part of Australia. He wants to buy some pipes, but he also has a problem with the acquisition of tobacco. The customs duty on a pound of tobacco is approx. $225.

I don't want to get into the politics of that, although a pox on a government that so shamelessly rapes its citizens in the name of doing them a favor (and it is only different from other governments by degrees and in the area of the rape, I suppose) but think of how blessed we are here in the U.S. with our current excise taxes, as high as they might seem.

I will tell you this: that will change. Money is in very short supply. You do not need to be a genius to understand that taxes will have to be raised and
tobacco is an easy, and almost willing target. Indeed, the stage has been further set by the new Surgeon General saying that just one puff of a
cigarette can kill you. Or even the whiff of 2nd hand tobacco. I am not exaggerating her egregious statement. Does it not then logically follow that
taxes on the product should be seriously increased?

No, it does not logically follow, not by any thought process I have been taught, but Congress uses their own system, and tobacco tax increases are
probable.

What I am trying to tell you, and since I don't sell tobaccoso this puts not a sou into my pocket, is that you had better do a little stocking up now. At worst, it will give you some well aged tobacco.

Heed me.

Good golly, a guy stays away from the forums for one weekend! What a conversation! I deeply appreciate everyone's responses, and am impressed by the scope of opinion and depth of experience that this board offers. I see the truth in each argument, and that makes it that much tougher to make decisions! (Curse you rational debate!)
I think I'm going to uphold my New Year's resolution. By doing so, I suppose I am indeed putting some faith in the US political system's entropy. I've always been more of a glass-half-full kinda guy anyway (not always in regards to politics of course). I'd rather not worry about it.
