I have a neat, old free-standing pipe rack that was probably hand-made in the 20s or 30s, fitting 14 pipes, and a top view kind of like this: [:::::::] It simply won't fit a couple of pipes bowl down (no matter how you approach the angle of attack) and so, a couple get stored bowl-up. The difference? None. I always swab the moisture post-smoke, and take the cleaner out when I'm done.
Might be the advantage of arid high-desert living, but rarely is resting pipe moisture a problem for me. Most of my pipes are good to go 12 hours after a smoke.
I've never liked the idea of leaving a pipe cleaner in the shank due to air flow concerns, but I believe there's enough air space to allow water to evaporate, provided the pipe is swabbed first, and then a clean cleaner is used to occupy the draft hole. It just isn't my thing, I'm too cheap to use pipe cleaners for anything but at least six cleanings.
