Resting Pipe with bowl up or down?

I have a neat, old free-standing pipe rack that was probably hand-made in the 20s or 30s, fitting 14 pipes, and a top view kind of like this: [:::::::] It simply won't fit a couple of pipes bowl down (no matter how you approach the angle of attack) and so, a couple get stored bowl-up. The difference? None. I always swab the moisture post-smoke, and take the cleaner out when I'm done.

Might be the advantage of arid high-desert living, but rarely is resting pipe moisture a problem for me. Most of my pipes are good to go 12 hours after a smoke.

I've never liked the idea of leaving a pipe cleaner in the shank due to air flow concerns, but I believe there's enough air space to allow water to evaporate, provided the pipe is swabbed first, and then a clean cleaner is used to occupy the draft hole. It just isn't my thing, I'm too cheap to use pipe cleaners for anything but at least six cleanings. :p

I just leave a cleaner in the stem overnight. I'm sure someone will tell me now why that's a bad idea.
Well, looks like the verdict's in and I'm wrong. Not the first time that's happened.

I noticed Monbla's rack and thought it nicely illustrated the practical idea that it is easier to make a DIY bowl-up pipe rack than a bowl-down version. Continuing in the practical vein, I have a large ash tray that serves as a holding area for smoked, but not yet cleaned pipes. All these soldiers have already had any dottle removed and have been pipe cleanered until the cleaner comes out both clean and dry. Before transitioning to the rack (or basket), discoloration is removed from vulcanite stems, the briar is lightly buffed with a waxy cloth and any remaining debris is removed from the bowl with a bent cleaner. So to me, bowl up or down storage won't make a noticeable difference. Friends of my missus, visiting my man cave, have been known to comment that my pipe racks and baskets "smell nice," for a guy's stuff, anyway. But I don't think I've ever put a pipe in my "holding area" so wet that liquid could drain down the stem or into the bowl, though I suppose such a thing could be possible, depending on what you're smoking.

after all this I notice the rack in Monbla's picture
I wonder if Monbla noticed. :p
I love how much fun this post has stirred up!!! :p

I never give it any thought, but was curious if there was a reason why anyone did it one way over the other.

The funniest thing is that it is actually Montbla's avatar that reminded me of the question!!! :D

Folks, pay attention, that pic has been used before on an earlier post about THAT style of rack. It is a pic of one of the French/Belgian author George Simenon's pipe racks that he put some of his 300 Dunhill's in ! I don't have a rack like that but would gladly accept one if any body here want's to make me one or get rid of theirs

No monbla,
You ARE now George Simenon.
The Internet said so.
And none of this will make any sense when you start forcing
us to look at your butt again... :p
