Gun prices must fluctuate a lot across the country. Here you can walk into Wal-Mart and buy an 870 express (synthetic stock, 28" barrel) for $300. Other sources are very close in price:

The Mossberg tends to be about the same price here in California.

I was going by the MSRP at Remington. I'm sure Walmart buys in bulk and can knock 50 bucks or so off that.
 
I guess I'm the only one with a bad Mossberg here, eh? I've got a 590 Mariner as one of my bear swatters and can't say I'm real fond of it. Durable as all heck, but picky about ammo. Cheap shell cases cause it to not feed properly. My 870 duck gun is older than I am and still works perfect, as well as looking almost new. I spoil that one though.

My current favorite is probably my Savage 110 SE in 458 Win Mag. This one just fits me better than most of my others, and has enough power to take down a pissed off grizzly when I'm fishing.

Close second would be my old Remington 700 in 30-06. Has a nice old wood stock my father made for it, but is unfortunately glass bedded all the way down so loses it's zero all the time. One of these days I'll get around to fixing that.
 
I had a chance to feel the remington and mossbergs before I bought my winchester 1300. One was too long, the other rattled a bit, also I didn't like the the action on them. Like my old winshester model 12 it felt like you either had to pull really hard or pull forward and then back. The winchester 1300, has a rotating bolt and releases with the shot. The recoil helps you cycle, and using 3" shells will cycle the action back all the way ejecting the shell, and you just gotta push it forward. The only problem with this, is I put a slug barrel on it not to long ago and shot some sabot slugs, which kick like a friggin mule, and when I pulled the trigger, the action cycled back so hard the shell ejected, flipped around somehow and hit me in the nose :lol:

Yeah I'm bettin the Cali model AR 15 is just about worthless with all the anti pollution stuff on it :lol!:

I've always been more of a hunter, but I have hunted in years due to work and such. Right now I'm down to one hunting rifle, a Savage 30-06. I do have a Remington pump .22 that I use for hunting rabbits (they are very healthy). I also have a Mossberg 800 series.

Next are my lever actions: a marlin 30-30 and a Marlin .357 mag.

I kinda wanted to get an AR, but since the new election, the price is ridiculous.
 
Thanks for the suggestions, gentlemen. I'll do all the due dilligence and see if there's a range that rents the forerunners... nothing can replace the hands-on try-out.

That remind me of a very excellent range in Garland, TX where you could rent most any legal firearm you could think of! Just an awesome place to shoot!

The amazing part is that you can even buy a gun here in the people's republic of Kaliforny any more.

I remember when I bought that 870 from WalMart. Had to wait the fifteen days or whatever it was and when I went in to pick it up, they said I had to have an escort walk with me and my still in the box gun out to my car. OK, whatever. They had some barely 18 year old kid do it, and I made a big deal over it on the way out.

"Gun coming through! Make way, clear out, man with a gun coming through!!" The poor kid looked like he was going to faint :lol: I asked him "Do you own a gun?"

"No".

"I didn't think so. Don't worry, I may be loaded but the gun isn't".

A redneck kid would have laughed, but that skinny skater kid wasn't no redneck! I don't recall seeing him there after that :lol:
 
What is sadder still is that we have to have conversations about something so basic and our Constitutionally protected rights to own guns in the first damned place.

The 870 is one SWEET shotgun :cheers:
 
The 870 is really rock solid,,,I've shot skeet with mine for 29 years,,shoot it,clean it,,,,,,,won't freeze up duck and goose hunting,,,,smooth and fast,,,like a girl I used to know,,,never mind,,,,,

I hunt with Rugers - no.1 in 375H&H & 7x57 & a M77 in 270win. Have an old English side by side for birds & stuff.
 
I just picked up a Remy 11-87 Premier a few weeks ago. I'm taking it to the skeet range this weekend for its first afternoon out (pipe in hand).

I also have a dreaded black rifle, and am unashamed of it. I am surprised how ignorant even conservative people are towards them.

We live in a culture where everyone checks their brain at the door and nobody thinks for themselves any longer. We have no idea how much people are educated by what they see on TV, thinking that a phone call scares of strangers, police are a phone call away, men fall down instantly when shot, and guns are only associated with bad people.

Yeah it always kills me when news anchors make statements like "the criminal used an automatic weapon to hold up the store", then you find out it was a .22 semi-auto or something similar.
 
I am partial to my 30 cal Carbine for just having fun, although ammo has become scarce recently and expensive when you can find it, so I am back to a Marilin semi-auto .22 for having fun.

My favorite all around, hunt for anything rifle is my Marlin 45/70 Model 1895G Lever Action Guide Gun with an 18 & 1/2"barrel. Depending on the round you use, from 230gr to 400gr bullets, you can virtually hunt any type of game in the USA & Canada.

I use to have a Winchester model 12 pump, in 12ga, which was and still is my favorite shotgun of all times. About 18 maybe 20 years ago I had a brain fart and sold it to a friend who was buying 3 or 4 guns from me at the time. After that I had an 870 for a number of years. It's a great gun, very well made and super reliable but I sold that off when I bough an 1100 for skeet and trap shooting.
