Well, I wouldn't wish poor pipe performance on anyone, but I am glad it's not a really serious issue.

Judging from the thread title, I was afraid that someone else had made the same mistake I once made, and ate almost an entire can of prunes. :|
Nominated for best post of the year!

I always thought condensation on the rim was a byproduct of the match flame (or lighter flame) being applied to the tobacco. No?

Do you have photos of this?

I've had pipes "bubble" in my college days before from puffing too hot, being full of pee and vinegar. And being inexperienced and just stupid I'd smoke them until the finish would head and bubble. Thankfully, they were cheapo bin pipes.

Are you smoking them too hot?

Context matters.

Gross.

I had a pipe look like it had water appear on the rim but when I touched it solidified on my finger. It was a brand new pipe and it turned out to be wax bubbling to the surface as I smoked it for the first time, is it possible that's what's happening here?

Agreed that the extended meaning of "rim weeping" is classic:).

Applying the match to the tobacco with, from what I understand, release of moisture is specifying at what point combustion/condensation occurs. Maybe?

I smoke Escudo in the REO and Cumberland in the AeroBilliard. I'm at the beginning of smoking a second tin of Escudo in this pipe. I've had this pipe since December and probably smoked it a dozen times. Good smoker. I've only had the AB since May and smoked it about the same number of times. Also a good smoker. I've smoked many tins of Escudo and Cumberland before in other pipes without incident. Whether the tobacco/pipe relationship has anything to do with rim weeping is anybody's guess.

As regards the substance I'd say it's water; I checking the REO for stain but it was clear.

I've noticed with my vaper blends, I tend to experience more condensation and stem gurgling than with other blends. I have also heard other pipe smokers claim that virginia based blends seem to create more condensation in their pipes. It may in fact be more an issue of tobacco blend, than pipe design, or briar curing. I dunno, just a possible explanation. I suppose there is also the possibility that it is a combination of the two.

If you are set on strict dedication of those pipes paired with those blends, you may never know for certain.

To be clear, without pictures, this isn't the sheen of moisture that happens especially when one lights up the first "getting started" lights of a bowl...right? I do notice at times a slight sticky, tawny-colored substance that's likely from the flame/tobacco moisture mixing with the natural tars and not-quite-combusted stuff sticking to the rim. It's easy enough to wet a finger and remove it, but I usually polish it away when it's "pipe cleaning time." <img class="emojione" alt="?" title="" src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/emojione/assets/png/1f937.png?v=2.2.7"/>

The AB weeps much more than the REO. It's clear, and I wouldn't say that it's combusted tars. The REO weeps throughout the bowl. I saw some at the very end of the bowl. I put it between my fingers to see if it was dye, but it wasn't.
