Oh boy, looks like I've got the perfect hapless victim little angel--time to put my elves on the case:

Ho ho ho...

H'mmm, I wonder how one would have a ton of coal delivered. . . I don't think ups or fed-ex could handle that :santa:

Something is wrong, it sounds like the majority drew Blackhorse. In regards to coal deliveries, make sure it's hard coal with a low sulphur content.

Well, you know how so many folks complain about getting their pipes started . . . I figure a ton of coal and some tongs should go along with a tin of 1792. . . .

Subject received, planning and giggling commencing. This is going to be fun.

COAL! YES...COAL! PLEASE?

I think the minimum comes in 40 lb. bags. There are a couple of places local to me that have it...and generally it's getting harder and harder to find. One of my 'must do' projects for the new year is to build a fair weather mini-forge. I think it consists of a heavy steel pan with a grid for the coal (like a super heavy BBQ construction) with the addition of an 'in' port for forced air, and an open able lid or cover. I still have research to do, but have been picking up odd items I'll need like hammers and tongs...but no coal yet.

considering the impurities in coal, wouldn't it be better to source coke? (no, not that kind . . . or that kind either -- while BH knows, coke is 'distilled' coal for anyone who doesn't)

For some reason I don't think it's 'right' to use coke for steel. I don't remember why at the moment, and I could be wrong.
Why not? Isn't this essential to the Bessemer process? :study:

I would think if anything coke would be very valuable in this day and age...

...Hey, weren't we supposed to be loading up the sleigh and not waxing material sciences???

Nah, in between the ordering and the sending, we tease about the strange things we might (and sometimes do) order and also wander off in odd directions

I looked it up...coal, coke and charcoal are interchangeable. And we're not talking about the BBQ kind of charcoal here, just the real wood stuff.

So that's settled...onward towards Christmas!

With all due respect, BH, it seems you are wrong. Sources or it didn't happen! :study:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coke_(fuel)

And I do not believe coke=coal. It's higher purity coal, further refined by heating or baking coal in a low-oxygen environment. Coal is usually referring to bituminous coal dug up from the ground, while charcoal is slowly pre-heated wood involving man-made processes.

Qualitatively, coal is probably the least pure fuel. See what you did, BH, you made me get nerdy. :geek:

I'll probably be getting coal myself now....

yes there are still coke plants here near pittsburgh, and coke is used and very important part in the making of steel.

A long time ago (if my history serves me correctly and with out looking it up) steel was invented (accidentally discovered) by the act of heating the Iron in coal/coke forges and then hammering the steel which infused the carbon into the steel making it harder and more durable.

again I didn't look this up to be sure I'm going from memory on something I saw on discovery or something like it

I roll steel all day long at work, but I've never been part of a melting process

Of course the products are not the same thing. (DUH!)

I should have qualified my response by saying that for use in a small forge any of the three items are OK, and in most forge designs, they can be interchanged.

And don't start yapping at me about sources being required, you young whipersnapper! If I say it...then it's true. *
