For the most part that's myth. Every moonshiner I've ever met took great pride in his/her work. You gotta remember it's illegal to sell AND illegal to buy. It's not like they have an unlimited market. One bad batch and they have a potential rat and possibly even worse a lost customer that already told his buddies where he got it.. One horribly gone wrong batch and they have a corpse, and that brings more heat than a rat and even worse bad rep than Joe Bingham telling His buddies Carzy Willies shine got him sick.

Makes sense. The meth cookers around Nevada don't have that kind of consideration.

I've had some home-stilled 'shine before, pretty much for family/friend consumption. One shot and I was out. The benefits of western NC kin-connections.

Probably a felony to send that stuff through the mail, or Santa's sleigh.

As far as Texas is concerned, the TABC is fine with you producing for youself(though federally it's a bit of a gray area), but to sell, distribute or ship across county lines(much less state lines) is a BIIIIIIIIIG felony; last time I checked, you're looking at the area upwards of a 10,000 dollar fine and up to 10 years in the pen, for one offense. I think they can count separate containers as a count each too...

Anyone ever tried Dan Blue Note?
Dan Blue Note is good, once it has dried a bit and aired out a bit. It is delicious, but strong. I found I have been smoking some more aros lately, though my tastes for VA are still as strong. The cold/dry air helps me to enjoy the aros more.

No gray area at all federally. It is totally illegal to distill any type/quantity of liquor for personal use (and remember that federal law always supersedes state law. The enforcement is another animal entirely...hello marijuana). However, if you don't tell anyone no one's gonna know so no big deal. I looked into it when I started home brewing.

There is a free license that the feds have that allows you to brew moonshine for use in your vehicles. There really is no oversight except that they can inspect your setup at any time. You just have to have the shine mixed with gasoline when they visit. But, it does allow you to have a legally running still.

Very interesting....I didn't know that. If I ever do have a still it will be for distilling water ;)

Yessir, Mr ATF Agent man!  I age all my gasoline in oak barrels.. specially charred too!  It makes the car go faster, and burn cleaner!  I swear!

So long as you stay under 10,000 proof gallons a year, it's free to get a fuel alcohol license. Break over that limit though, and you're looking at taxes... last time I checked, the tax on 20,000 proof gallons a year was close to $250,000 bucks.

Scottie, if I remember right(I may not), you can buy a 1 gallon still or smaller without repercussions solely for the purpose of distilling water. At least at one point there was some stuff I came across stating you could...

Nevada has similar laws, but one interesting thing is we have purity laws... all the stuff must be sourced from here, made here, and consumed here, unless you get special use to export out of state. Otherwise, you still have to make everything here to say it's from here. Liquor laws and history are some of the most fascinating legal subjects.

Yeah, as I recall when I looked into it there's a free Federal license you can get to privately distill, which like d4klutz pointed out is classified as "fuel," but that license is still trumped by state law. Colorado, for example, forbids distillation, period, so the Federal license doesn't count for nuthin here, as far as I understand it. Coming from the South especially, Kyle's right about state liquor laws making some interesting reading!

Yeah, all the stories I've heard about real bad batches come from Prohibition, when some fly-by-night amateurs would try their hand to make a quick buck and mess it all up. I've got a buddy whose dad was a sheriff back in the day and had a real gross story he liked to tell about this one area where the rendering company kept arriving to pick up dead critters reported by the roadside only to find them missing by the time they arrived, and the sheriffs eventually busted some jokers who were scavenging the remains and using them to try and speed up the fermentation. Merry Christmas, everybody!

But yeah, all the families out in the hills and hollers knew what they were doing, before, during, and after Prohibition, otherwise they wouldn't have kept doing it, like PB said.

Y'all are dropping me a PM when you ship and when you received, right? The Secret Santa, not the moonshine. Ho ho ho! hic..... :drunken:

Still waiting for one item to arrive.

RE: distilled products, does lighter fluid count as 'fuel'? Or perhaps you could convince the 'revenuers' you're making cleaning fluid for pipes! :drunken:

I'm sorry...we're supposed to be shipping something somewhere. I thought we were just buying a bunch of stuff to smoke/eat in honor of our recipient?!?!?! Well, crap. :lol!:
