Semois

Does anyone know how to get a hold of some Belgian Semois tobacco? I have been enjoying bowls of Vincent Manil's  La Brumeuse from my 100 gr block.

I am told that it is very similar to the product that "our boys" put in their pipes when fighting the Hun over 100 years ago.

(BTW- no more brother wars)
I like its riparian richness. I would like to try some of the other authentic Semois producers. Martin, Couvert or Didot. Our European brother speak highly of each of them.

I contacted JPP Cigares (they carry it) a Belgian retailer. I was excited when I entered his polite msg into Google translate. His response: Impossible. We no longer wish to ship it abroad.  

Does anyone else have any interest in trying to get any of this interesting tobac into our pipes? Perhaps it is time to attempt a group buy?

Thanks for all the suggestions of places to buy Vincent Manil. I bought the Manil that I mentioned enjoying at Pipe Guys.

Due to clumsy writing on my part, I wasnt able to convey my question.

I was trying to see if anyone knew had a lead on where I could buy Martin or Didot brand Semois tobacco- with out going to Belgium in person.

Sorry about any confusion in my query.

BTW, I am planning to try growing Semois tobacco for the 2019 season. I recently read that the Belgian tobacco industry is sort of dying and i wanted to see if I could help the last remainers- in my own small way.

I'm afraid I can't help with how to get the other brands. As to growing....that's a difficult proposition. Aparently like wine terrior is a big player in the character of Semois flavor. Unless you can exactly duplicate the soil conditions and whether what you grow will be different. How different? No way to know until you try it. You may like yours better you never know. I wonder if Vincent would even sell any seeds?

Excellent! I wasn't aware that anyone had Semois seeds. I really need to get reinvolved in growing. His selection is impressive to say the least. Good luck with your grow. Please keep us posted how things turn out.

Ahh, sorry Dr. Pierce. I should’ve been more thorough in reading your post. I wasn’t aware of the other growers/brands. I do know that the EU regulations with shipping to the US are extremely tight. I wouldn’t begin to know how to go about procuring anything outside the Manil tobaccos.

It’s a shame to read that the smaller manufacturers are an endangered, but this seems to be the way things are swinging when it comes to premium tobacco. Without bigger backing and in some cases even with it, good tobacco and the incentives that used to come with growing it specifically for our share of the market, which is minuscule, have all but vaporized. The disappearance of McClelland comes to mind.

He just posted on the FTT forum- the other day that he has all the seeds I'm planning to grow 2019. He has them but they're not lasted yet.

I have contacted Couvert-I enjoy his Vallée du mont d'or- but he refuses to send abroad for admin headaches rationale. It wouldn't be any different with the other chaps as it's now forbidden, in Belgium, to buy or sell tobacco via the internet (i.e., using the postal services).
